Default Cordoba Torres

Looking for opinions please. Mostly a Travis/Atkins type player but I do flatpick some as well. I am getting interested in a really good tone from a nylon string guitar. I am normally a Martin fan but their nylon string model is such a long scale that it turned me off. Which brings me to the above guitar, my budget is up to 4,000 or below of course.

Has anyone got the Cordoba Torres model or could recommend an equivalent, I have listened to all the YouTube vids I could find with this model being played and the tone sounds great to me. I know the player makes a lot of difference, so I take that into consideration.
Thanks for your input.

I owned a Torres and found it very nice but I have had couple Cordoba C10 Parlors, both with spruce tops, and enjoyed them just as much. For a third the price of a Torres I think it might be worth trying this very similar guitar.

Have played the Torres, Hauser, and Rodriguez. The Torres was my favorite. Would have bought it, but felt like overkill for a guy who hasn't played standard classical repetoire for many years now. I always loved the look and playability of the "miniaturized" classical though. Just a neat little instrument.

I have a Torres. It’s my nicest classical guitar. It has a beautiful voice.
I also have a Kenny Hill 628 Player Series. It too is a smaller instrument with a shorter scale. It doesn’t have the tone of the Torres but is certainly acceptable at its price point.
I’ve also heard good things about the Cordoba classical parlor guitars. I have not played one. Bradford Werner did reviews on both the C9 and C10 that may be of interest to you.

I will add that I’ve heard good things about the Cordoba Esteso model- smaller body with a 648mm scale-which is less expensive than a Torres model and occasionally appear on the used market.

Good luck with your search.
Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Best,
Tom

Here is a video of the Esteso; spruce and cedar.

Tavi Jinariu does make any guitar sound good though.

Thanks for the info , I might see if I can find some of these to play. The you tube vids sound good but I’m sure if all the models were sitting there to play I would find one that stood out. Looks like there are more short scale and narrower nut models than I first thought.

Martinngibson,
The newer Martin nylon string guitars have the painfully long scale length.
The older C models( pre 1970 or 71) have the 25.4 inch scale. The G ( made pre 1962 I think)models have the 24.9 inch scale length. I have not played these and have heard and read that they are not classical guitars per se, but rather folk instruments: different sonic profiles maybe?
Anyway, thought I’d point that out as your budget could accommodate a vintage Martin nylon.
Are you considering any of the “crossover” type nylon models? Just another thing for you to explore.

Good luck,
Tom

I have not played a Cordoba Torres, but I'd like too. However, if you flatpick and Travis with a thumb pick, that will drive the strings harder than a typical finger stylist does with their nails. I'm not sure about the Torres, but most of the Cordoba's I've played come with pretty low action... even the C10 is a little on the low side. Okay for most finger players, but a hard driving pick might get a little buzzy.

Now I don't play with a pick much, but when I do, I prefer bigger bodies in steel strings. Haven't tried a good smaller body classical like the Torres, but I'd like to.

Just a couple things that might be worth considering or not.

Thanks for the info on the Martins early models. I did look for one because of the shorter scale length but nothing found that I felt totally comfortable with because of either price, distance with no return, etc. so I decided best to go another direction.
I live in a small town and have to drive 50 miles one way or 70 the other to get to a GC that has the potential to have some nylon crossover guitars. Or gamble, order/return type of thing.
I’m keeping an open mind because while most of my picking is Chet or flatpicking, this guitar will be to broaden my horizons of mostly more mellow type tunes, and the use of bar chords as opposed to thumb wrap.
But , I’m getting some good info on here. Thanks

Yes, I saw that company and sent them a message 2 days ago, but no reply yet. They are about 3hrs drive time so not bad. I drove 3 hrs to Atlanta to play 4 carbon fiber acoustic guitars, good trip as I came away with one. May be a trip to NC soon.

If I were you, I'd check out all the fine used and new classical guitars that Dream Guitars in Weaverville, N.C. has to offer. They have a large inventory. The store is about 3 hours from where you live too.
For your $4,000 budget, you can easily get a really fine classical guitar. Last year I purchased an used concert professional classical guitar, by an up and coming luthier, that was owned by the director of an European music conservatory and made with Brazilian rosewood back and sides and spruce top for $3,000. It even came with a Rodgers tuning machines that retails for $1,000. New retail for the guitar would have been $8,000 or more.
Cordoba with its factory setting are "limited." The factory low end ones and high end ones use SAME process. The pricer ones have better woods, tuners, inlay work, etc. Most guitar builders and a lot of guitar players say factory settings can't produce excellent instruments.
If a buyer's budget is much less than what you are spending, then a factory instrument is the way to go. My weekend, travel, practice classical guitar that I keep out in the open on the guitar stand is a small factory guitar I got used for $700. It plays easily and sounds good enough for me to bring to my lesson sessions.
Good luck in your search.
Robert A.

Robert and Rapido, thank you both and all others that have replied. I just need to get out and try a few and see if one speaks to me more than others .
