basically "flicking down" with the 2nd and 3rd fingers to strum on the 1, picking up with the 2nd finger on the two on 1 or more low strings, down with the thumb for 1 or two low strings on the three, up with the index on the 4 again.

To be more accurate, it's a 1-and-two-and-three-and-four-and feel running through the pattern twice per measure.

I do something similar with thumb and finger pick starting with the the thumb on the 1.

Once you get it down try it with triplets using "Flick-index-thumb" on a single beat. Once you make it mechanical you can throw it in the middle of anywhere. A full measure of that in the right spot makes folks lean forward in their seats.

You don't even need a guitar. "Practice" when you're watching TV. If you have a guitar in your lap, just mute the strings. Without a guitar "flick, up, down, up, flick, up, down, up". Always tapping your foot. It'll become automatic in no time.

Can't stress enough. Always tap your foot.

I'm not sure that it's quite the same technique, but Steve Baughman teaches a course on Clawhammer guitar on Peghead Nation. He has an intro video you can check out for free.

I had a profession transcriber work out some of JLT's songs from his solo concerts and now have a clear view of his technique used on many occasions. On the first beat he brushes the bottom two strings with his thumb. On the second beat, he brushes from the upper strings down with this index finger. On the third beat, he slams the bottom string with the side of his thumb as he flicks the upper four strings with the back of his 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers, the last beat is similar to the second. Thanks for all your input!!

Some frail type strumming. For example similar to

There is a bit more but that is the gist.
