I usually have three to four drinks before performing, so not drunk but feeling the effects. Open mics are my main social life and I like to let my hair down at them, I only play once every week or two so don’t see an issue with this.

Yep. Once so drunk at an open mic blues night that I went Hendrix-style, playing behind my head, on a bet from a (non-performing) friend. With a bloody heavy Les Paul. In retrospect it could’ve gone much worse, as the headstock stayed attached, but I’ve not tried it since, and I suspect it wasn’t the best I’ve ever sounded…

Around a campfire? A home party/jam? Sure. On stage, getting paid? Nope. My routine at our regular gig (2x/month) is to get there early, set up, and have a Jameson on ice, and a cold beer ... and talk with my bandmates before the show. The Irish to loosen up, the beer for hydration in the first set (I also sing) that goes on stage behind me (but I rarely finish it during a three hour gig).

Once done, I head home. Sober. But I might not stay that way once I get there!

I've never gigged while drunk, or even after a single drink. I feel confident that I could play just as well after a single drink but any more than that I would be running on autopilot, which may or may not work depending on the complexity of the songs I'd be performing.

Maybe if someone was paying me. Otherwise, why not?

I'm sure I have, at some campfire/cook out/house party along the way, but I don't remember it.....

I'll have a beer or two if I'm getting paid to play, one or two after.

One can help you relax and play better, more than that and the performance quality definitely goes down.

No, but I have played under the influence of beta blockers. All good so far.
Best,

Maybe you just need more practice. Don't give up so easily.
