Yamaha FS-800 is a great guitar and well within your price range.
What ever you, be sure to also get a case/gig bag!

That Orangewood 135 new! Might be hard to not try that one.

I have the orangewood. It’s surprisingly well built and sounds **** decent. I got it for my one year old so he can bang around on it while I’m playing and not feel like I’m nervous about him shattering it. Since it’s lying around all the time I actually play it quite a bit. It needs better tuners but is pleasantly voiced and sounds better than any cheap guitar I’ve ever played.

Hi all, thanks very much for the thoughtful replies.

I think open tuning is a great idea for what she is starting off with now.

Leaning toward just trying that Orangewood. It’s possible I may not get to try it first (ship directly to niece) but it feels like for this use it may be just fine. Otherwise I may end up checking for used listings forever on some of the higher end models mentioned.

I have a one year now too, not tons of interest yet. I may have to check one out for him too.

When I started playing guitar as a kid, I already had played a Ukulele for a while.
I found that I could use the high 4 strings on the guitar and play it like the Uke.
I played the guitar this way for a few months and then learned to play full open chords like G, C and D.
It made for an easy and smooth transition.
