Default What guitar is in your sights?

I just bought one I was always curious about, a McIlroy, and 2 months ago a Pellerin so I'm good for another week or so,
(I sold two though )

What guitar are you thinking about buying/trading for and why?

I’ve wanted a Hummingbird for a long time. I really like that classic early stones acoustic sound. Torn between the Custom 60’s model or one of the Original models. I still have so much to learn and experience to gain so I’m holding off for a little while and playing what I have. Hard right now to find any and I’d really like to play several to find the right one. There’s another side of me that’s about three or four beers away from just ordering one and be done with it.

I've asked Iris guitars for a quote on a mahogany ND-200 jumbo with 1.725" nut (like my Gibson SJ-200) and Gotoh SE700-M5 tuners in place of the Golden Age tuners they use.

My Gibson has spoiled me - deep warm rosewood like tone but has the flatter, even balance of maple, no scooped mids.

Thinking I might like the contrasting raised mid balance with mahogany.

Honestly, I don’t know as there are so many to choose from across the price spectrum. I have aquired a few I haven’t done a NUGD presentation for. I lust too much to try different body shapes but mostly prefer dreads. On my hit list are Yamaha FGX5 vs LL16D-ARE. A Larrivee Tommy Emmanuael or SD-50E
Too many more to try.

Not a guitar but a neck for a 1980 Fender Strat. Might have to do a conversion from a 3 bolt micro-tilt to a 4 bolt. Some folks are charging more then a new MIA Strat for just An original 70s-80 neck.

A Morgan on here.
A Gallagher Doc Watson
A couple different Collings
A Larrivee OM-60

Gotta figure out what to sell first though.

I have the FGX5 and Larrivee C-03-TE Tommy , both are stellar guitars in their own way. Very different.

My next purchase is a Martin HD28 for my rosewood dread and to go along with my Martin OM-28. Although a Santa Cruz or Collings is nagging on my shoulder but not stock currently to tempt me.

If it sounds anything like my 94 Gibson J100xtra, with Hog back & sides, I think you'll be happy😁

I'm looking for another Super Jumbo, with a pickup, not concerned about brand, but leaning towards a Yamaha CJX-32 or Taylor 415/615 type of guitar.

I’m looking forward to November when my Dreadnought is due. It will be made by Ciaran McNally. Sunburst Adi on Mahogany. I was finding my OM and 000 just lacking a little bit of belly backing trad.

The Dread to rule all Dreads.

I’ll then have my OM-F (cutaway), 12er (also an OM), a fantastic 000-28 which I just love playing on and this new Dread. Hard to be sure but I think I’m done? Albeit, I took the 12er on in my “curveball” slot not intending to necessarily keep it. I like to rotate that spot. However, also made by Ciaran, it turns out to be an amazing guitar and I wouldn’t readily part with it now.

I did previously have a National O Style reso and I loved it…but I really wasn’t using it at all it just looked great on a stand.

So yeah I think I am finished acquiring guitars when the Dread arrives this winter.

How do you like your new McIlroy Barry?

I’m not in a hurry, but when the time comes, a Gibson J-45.

I’m saving up to hopefully commission a baritone 12 string Jumbo from Avalon at the end of the year.

Well, I have a Pre-War on order and due sometime probably in Spring 2024, about when I turn 65. When they’re ready to start the build and the time comes for choosing, it’ll be a mahogany 00 or 000. I’m as happy as a clam with my CEO-7 and 000-28EC, but I just want to see if a real premium guitar like a Pre-War will a) be THAT much better and b) make enough of a difference for how and what I play to send the CEO-7 packing. Of my two nice acoustics, the CEO-7 is my favorite by a lot, so I should arguably be looking to replace the 000-28EC instead, but I think I’m mostly just more of a mahogany guy these days than rosewood, so if I want to see how good a Pre-War can be, it should be in what’s become my favorite wood combination.

So it’s gonna have to be a grand slam to replace the CEO-7, but it’s worth checking out and, if I don’t love it enough to have it replace the CEO-7, I should be able to sell the Pre-War and get my $$ back out of it in about a half hour, so then I’ll know. But if it IS that great, I suppose I won’t be that sad to sell the CEO-7. No way I’ll keep all three. For my playing, having two nice wooden acoustics is an indulgence. Having three where two of them are tonally kind of similar would just be confusing and stressful (hey, I know how my head works - it WOULD be stressful). So I may have all three for a little while as I decide, but ultimately either the Pre-War or CEO-7 will go.

That’s the only thing I have my sights on. One way or another, I expect this to be my last big guitar purchase. I’m set for electrics and set for acoustics even if this doesn’t work out, so if it does I’m REALLY set for acoustics. I’m just not curious about anything else and I’m sooo happy with what I’ve got already, that I feel vaguely silly doing even this.

with three dreads, a Roy Smeck, a 000, two 00, and a 0, 2 x 12 strings, and three archtops, a National, a Dobro, an open back banjo, a mandolin, and an electric bass, I'm not sure what I should be aiming at now . Any ideas?

You need a Larrivee OM-40 or 40R and several more open back banjos, 1 is nowhere near enough...
