His wife and Musgraves singing, his son Tommy singing and playing guitar, his nephew on guitar, and Pat McLaughlin's son on electric guitar.

Prine played several guitars, including a new Prine signature Martin, which he joked would make good kindling.

I'm a Kacey Musgraves fan after last night, too. In addition to singing three songs with him during his show, she closed out her opening set with this one:

An excellent night under the Colorado stars.
Koop, great post and love that clip. Anyone who loves John Prine will enjoy this clip. Please watch, folks! Kacey Musgraves wrote a tune called "Burn One With John Prine" before she ever met the man. Here she is playing it for him for the first time. She's a heckuva talent.

Prine makes me laugh so hard, and laughter is so good for the soul.

Thanks again, Koop.

I was also at the show last night and that was AWESOME! It was my first John Prine show. Couldn't ask for better weather either!

I'm late to this thread but wanted to chime in with my appreciation for an amazing singer songwriter. His lyrics just blow me away. Such an economy of words. He can paint a whole world in one line. And his phrasing and timing do so much to bring out the emotion of the song. He is just brilliant.

Best,
Jayne

Thanks for your contribution, Jayne. Couldn't agree more.

You know, I've read twice now the official biography of Steve Jobs. He had a saying early on in Apple's history, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication," and John's music is certainly that.

There is an elegance in simplicity that is a lot harder to achieve than may appear at first glance. The prose writers I admire -- Chekhov, Hemingway, E.B. White, Carver -- as well as the songwriters I admire -- Prine, Tom Waits, Steve Goodman, Michael Smith, Kate Wolfe, etc. -- are able to paint a vivid picture with the least number of words. This is a true art, and John is a true artist.

Thanks, Jayne!
Scott

Dang, I've never seen a show at Red Rocks -- live just a little too far -- but wow, what a stunning venue. Gotta get over there one of these days.

It's worth the trip for sure -- no place better on a warm summer night. We're spoiled.

If a band you like is playing a show there it would be worth a flight in my opinion! It's my favorite outdoor venue

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but if you're a John Prine fan you'll love the movie Daddy and Them. Stars John and Billy Bob Thorton. Great great great movie with a great soundtrack.

Ryan, I've never seen the movie, but the song, "In Spite of Ourselves," is hilarious.

This might have been the clip you were trying to post earlier, but it appears it's a dead link. Here's Iris and John doing this wonderful little tune, with a hilarious intro by JP. They don't get much better.

JP said, "I play the brother-in-law with low self-esteem, so call me if you have that role."

John is on tour right now. Catch an American legend in the flesh, before he retires.

I'm kinda cursing Mr. Prine at the moment. I can't get his "When I get to heaven" lyrics out of my mind.

And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
...

I really liked this part:

And I always will remember these words my daddy said
He said, "Buddy, when you're dead, you're a dead pecker-head"
I hope to prove him wrong, that is, when I get to heaven.
