A few years ago I had a stereo pair of M300's and a stereo pair of Beyerdynamic MC930's and was able to A/B them for a week or so. I play only fingerstyle acoustic, have a fairly light touch and no percussion etc. In the end I kept the MC930's and those are the only mics I use. In my setup, I found them to be a little less bright on the high end, and a bit sweeter in the midrange.

There is a price difference, but that had no impact on my decision. The Beyers just worked better for me.
Some years ago I tried out the MC930 mikes based on reviews. Good mikes.

I've had my pair of M300's for a few years now and love them. I was able to borrow a pair for a week which really gave me the chance to try them out. All of Michael Watt's videos on youtube where he uses them also helped make up my mind.

All the recent videos on my youtube channel use them, here is one.

If you want a better audio only recording just let me know, happy to send one or post it to SoundCloud.

As MikeMcKee mentioned there are lots of good options in this price range. I think I paid $1300 used for my pair on Ebay. I like that they are lower noise, have a good output, and seem to work for my tone on the guitar, which leans towards darker.

Sounds good. A bit on the darker side. Cedar top?

Quite dark Sitka and looks nice.

Tone wise your recordings that I have heard have seem quite dark sounding which is why cedar came to mind (though I have not seen cedar with silking like that). Not sure why that is. It's not just the mikes. I have recording quite a bit with the same mikes. Is there something done post recording with software that would account for it, the recording space? You might post a raw recording for comparison.

I recorded Anton's first CD. He gets a very warm tone, no matter what guitar he plays, and whether you're listening to a recording or him in person. Tone is clearly in the fingers. I think his tone is lovely and perfect for the music he plays.

I agree with Doug. I think playing technique has a huge impact on the sound one gets from a guitar.

All I can tell you is I've sat in front of Anton many times while he was playing over the past decade (or 2?). This sounds like him in person.

Man Doug, has it been that long? I think I first went to Swannanoa in 2001 or something, which is where I would have met you.

Yea, I dunno Rick, I have recorded in a few nice studios and that is how I seem to sound. I think acrylic nails have improved my tone a decent amount, but other than that I have kind of stopped worrying about it.

Back to the OP's question, yea the Gefells are great mics, as are a bunch of others. I guess the ideal thing to do would be to order a few different pairs and return the ones you don't like. A place like Vintage King might do that. I know for some retailers the Gefells are a special order, so they might be a bit harder to trial than say a KM-184.

I have a pair of m300's that I like a lot. I got them after Anton generously loaned me his to record my Ballads and Blues album. I made a little video comparison after borrowing a friend's 184 pair two weeks ago. Not very scientific, but I did try to keep everything the same (there was even a ruler!) and then I tried to volume match.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LuQmsNXMAQ I guess they're controversial in some circles, but I've always really liked the 184's.
