Great work Ryan and Steve. That quilted maple is stellar. I look forward to meeting you in Memphis.

Thanks Tim. The report will be available soon. Of course, the choice here was made for me, since we patterned this guitar after my Grandfather's instrument. I wasn't just having a walk on the wild side one crazed afternoon...as much as I enjoy alternative tonewoods! So I am hoping your experience with oak ends up being mine. I can tell you this, the size of the pores will give serious pause in future choices.
See ya soon,

Hey Steve and Ryan,
That oak parlor looks really cool, and I imagine the tone will be wonderful. It reminds me of some of the work by Hans Brentrup, who is a big proponent for oak guitars and similar styling, such as the wide purflings. I will be anxious to hear of your interpretation of its tone.

Thanks for the kind word, Chuck. I first saw Hans' work when our guitar was on the drawing board. It was fortuitous, as he became a real source of inspiration. And, I talked him into selling me this set of curly white oak.
Have you seen some of his purflings that use woods like Bloodwood, Pink Ivory and Holly, to name a few? Really beautiful work. It is sad his health is driving him out of lutherie!

Steve

Hans has attended a number of our Twin Cities AGF Get-Togethers; always bringing a guitar or two. I've also been in his workshop a number of times and able to see his work in progress, including lots of variations on his purflings; wonderful work. Wish he was still on this forum.

You should send him a picture of your parlor.

I sent him one when the purfling/binding was finished, before the oak was stained. And you are right, I should send him a finished pic. Thanks for the encouragement!

Pat, I wish you could as well! It would be a better show with your participation.
Thanks for the heads-up on Hans' book. That should be good reading!

Interesting question, Josh. Though I haven't thought of it quite that way, I would have to say yes. At first it's just the woods...they are different. But initial processes are the same for any guitar, and all of them start as wood working projects. Curvilinear carpentry. But somewhere in the process, each one takes on its own personality, revealed ultimately when strung up. Of course this little parlor was outside the "usual" for us, so it differentiated itself fairly quickly.
I really do look forward to building more of this style. It is a lot of fun.
Thanks for the kind word!

Steve

Wow, I've been too busy to catch up on this thread. Here's the pics of the backs of the F1's. Two lucky people will be walking away with the best deals of the show!

Now I have to get back to work.
