Default Build Thread: Kraut OM, Euro Spruce and Brazilian RW

I kept coming back to play Ray's guitars over and over at Healdsburg, mostly the Modified Dreadnought, but also Larry's OM. Because Ray's guitars have such a unique and girthy tone, I'm really excited to supplement my punchy/projecting Baranik with this sound. Specs will most certainly evolve after I receive my Modified Dread, but I'm tossing around a lot of ideas now

Top: Spruce of some type most likely, possibly something else
Back/Sides: Brazilian Rosewood
Cutaway: Yes
Scale length: Possibly 25" standard, possibly fan fret with 25.00" in the treble and 25.75" in the bass
Special features: Manzer wedge, sound port

Edit: After seeing the woods firsthand and tapping a small handful with Ray, we decided on the following Brazilian Rosewood set for the back and sides. It came down to my belief that I will get a slightly more crystalline/sparkly sound from the Brazilian and I liked the interesting features of this particular set.

Thanks for posting, Juston - I'll be watching with keen interest!

Phil

(oh, and how observant am I? I missed the PP and BD in the title until after I posted! Saw your name and Kraut OM and ignored the rest... too funny... As always I will enjoy your build thread.)

Juston, you had me at "Pine". "Driftwood" set the hook.
Now what's this nonsense about rosewood and spruce?

Bahh!

Hi Juston,

I'm looking forward to seeing this progress. Please update regularly. I have just ordered a wenge modified dread from Ray. I can't wait to see how that sounds.

Both of those EIR sets look fantastic. It's all too easy to forget what a superb wood good ole EIR is.

Looking forward to seeing this one develop also.

cheers,
Steve

Actually, it's the same set under different lighting. I agree it's a pretty stellar set. Here's a sister set under finish. This is the guitar I played at Healdsburg. Frankly, I don't think it gets much better. Brazilian or otherwise.

One of my favousrite guitars is an EIR and Sitka M built by David Oddy. It's the first custom guitar I ever had built and I still love it.

Looks like a very interesting build. I've only played one of Ray's guitars (an OM in EIR/Sitka). I liked it very much.

Is the Ponderosa/Driftwood OM a seperate project from this one?

The original post wasn't on 4/1, so I can't imagine I'm the only one who's curious.

As Bill Engvall says, "Here's your sign."

Todd, I apologize ahead of time. I'm sure my reply will get deleted/edited, but I just couldn't resist.

We're still waiting on our contacts in Belgium to retrieve the right piece of driftwood. Nothing usable has washed ashore yet.

Unfortunately, it appears that Ponderosa Pine and Belgian Driftwood are likely to be completely impractical from a large variety of standpoints ranging from availability to structural integrity and suitability as tonewoods.

The wood choices, in all seriousness, are still up in the air. I really like the set of East Indian Rosewood pictured above, and I have asked Ray to set this wood aside. However, many of the choices for this OM are likely to take shape after I receive my current modified dreadnought build. I will likely use this guitar as an important point of reference for everything from scale length (and whether or not I want another multi-scale guitar) to wood choice and ornamentation.

I was trying to figure out what the heck belgian driftwood was.

I'm assuming that was the top & back & the sides were pine.

Sounded like a risky thing to do on an $8000 guitar if you're concerned about structural integrity.

It's meant to be a joke...
