Default Road trip to Tennessee...

In a couple of weeks I'm driving down to the Bluff City area to pick up a package (to be disclosed when I return). I'm probably going to take my youngest grandson (12) for the ride as company. We're taking 81 down through VA. Any good burger places on the way that we should try?

Ah ha! Since you didn't ask about guitar shops to visit along the way, I suspect (but can't prove beyond the coincidental) that your destination has something to do with guitars.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar enough with the territory to make any burger recommendations.

When you get to Memphis, then, Huey's.

Ok thanks.

This is a non-guitar related trip!

Default Ridgewoods

If you like barbecue, in Bluff City or just outside of it is Ridgewoods. Some years back People magazine called it the best barbecue on the country, and I would tend to agree. Formidable women in what looks like nurse’s uniforms serve up the stuff in big portions. I live in SW Virginia and every now and then contemplate going back there just for a meal.

Hi Barry,
Enjoy your drive through the Shenandoah Valley. You’ll go right through my old uni when you pass through Harrisonburg Va—I taught at James Madison back in the early 90s.

So it ain’t a guitar, but you’re driving all the way to Bluff City to fetch it? That implies it can’t be shipped. The fact that you’re taking only a 12 yr old as backup implies it ain’t a pool table or a piano. Does it have 4 legs and a tail?

Dyer’s on Beale Street is what a lot of locals like. Deep fried hamburgers. Certainly not healthy but good. But if you are going to Memphis why mess with hamburger? Barbecue is king, there, pork barbecue. Big debate topic in Memphis is Corky’s versus Rendezvous for ribs. Personally, NEVER had a good experience at Rendezvous. Corky’s was much better for ribs. A lot swear by Rendezvous but many don’t like it. The best overall barbecue in Memphis is the Barbecue Shop on Madison. Everything they have is outstanding. Cozy Corner is also good, especially for Cornish hen.

Ridgewood BBQ is just up the road from where I work - we go there for lunch once in a while. Get the blue cheese and crackers for an appetizer, and bring an appetite.

Since it's a non-guitar item you're retrieving, need me to point you to good guitar stores in the area?

Hamburger + Memphis = Huey’s.
I wish I had an idea for other stops along the way, but I don’t.

Memphis is the wrong end of the state, y'all.

Bluff City is in Sullivan county, northeast TN.

Barry,
If I were driving through Harrisonburg, I’d stop at Jess’ Quick Lunch for a couple of chili dogs. The fries are good, too.

The original diner is downtown, so parking wouldn’t be easy. But there’s a second location more highway 81 friendly.

My favorite burgers in Nashville are at Pharmacy Burger. But there is usually a pretty long wait to get it. The web site has the approximate wait time based on the number of people in your party.

I'll keep my eye out for it, thanks.

It’s the Harrisonburg exit for highway 33.
