F-holes decouple the top, to some extent, from the rest of the box, so the box works more like a separate resonator and reflector. This is sort of analogous to the way the resonator works on the back of a bluegrass banjo. A rounded soundhole placed somewhere in the upper bout (I like to put it in the bass side of the upper bout, near the edge) acts more like a sound port in an enclosed speaker cabinet. How this translates into the final sound of the instrument depends on many other factors.
