Why do Yairi guitars not hold value?
I've noticed that Yairi's just don't hold there value
on the used market. Even the Masterworks line that is all solid and high end. I personally love they way the DYM95Sb looks and sounds. What gives? |

Marketing. As in, there is none.

Yeah, they've gotta step it up. People should know
about the Yairi quality..... |

People don't know what they're getting?
I've a 1966 all-solid Yairi nylon string (pre S&K Yairi split) and it sings. [Only trouble is finding 1 1/4" spaced machine tuners for it - Anyone any clues?] I have to say I'm deeply disappointed by the guitars put out by the supposed Yairi-Alvarez collaboration. I wrote to the then distributor of my guitar and the Managing Director wrote back saying he remembered my model being launched. It cost then some £28 - more than he earnt in a month. Someone doing his (then junior) job now earns about £1200 per month. He did say guitar making methods can now create a similar guitar for about 1/4 of the price, but not with the skill and use of good woods that the Yairis used. |

With guitars American made still holds value. Yairi is just not a name like Martin. I agree great guitars, what this tells you is buy used.

I've never played a Yairi. I always associate the name with Alvarez, and I can't stand the sound of Alvarez guitars.
I'd like to play a Yairi though. |

I have a Yari DMY96 and paid $1,000 for it used from dream guitars with a feather pickup installed. It's an OK guitar and plays good. The plugged in sound is really pretty good and I use it for playing out once in a while. It goes in the car when I am going on my surfing vacations and guitar takes a back seat to the waves. It is not a great guitar but with some tonerite and titanium brdge pin upgrades its on the high side of good. Value just not there in terms of resale. It's my beater so I don't care.

I think people who don't know about the Yairi history and quality think that it is a cheap Japanese guitar. It is unfortunate, but it means you can get a lot of guitar for a little money if you are buying them used.
I've also noticed that people tend to hang on to them for a long time, so resale may not matter that much. I've had mine for 20 years and I will never sell it. In fact I have promised it to my pickin' buddy if I go first.

Bought this Yairi 6 or 7 years ago used for $450. An absolute steal for what it is, probably the best production wood Doubleneck acoustic ever made. K. Yairi was a gifted luthier.

I owned a DY74C for many years. It was good, I would not go so far as to say great. certainly one of the better Japanese brands. I traded it for my first really outstanding guitar, a Mossman, and I recall I got most of what I paid on the trade. My understanding is that they are much more highly regarded in Japan and offer many more models in the home market.
