Default Martin 000-17 sound

Getting antsy to possibly get a 17 series. Would this sound too close to my D-18? I’m looking for a smaller scale, body size. GC doesn’t carry in stock locally, but Acoustic Vibes has them in stock.

I don't think the new 17 series sound much like a D-18. At least not the one I own or have owned? Particularly if you're comparing a dread to a 000. I haven't played the 000-17 but it is an interesting model. The DSS-17 I have is less refined and more open sounding than my D-18. I'd like to try the 000-17. Maybe Mick will chime in...I know he has one and gigs it fairly regularly. He'd be a good guy to talk to.

Following this too, if anyone could chime in, I have an 00-17s, but I've been looking at a 000-17.

Thread hijack - how do you like your 00-17s? I’m interested in what I’ve seen online but haven’t found one to put my hands on.

I really liked the DSS-17 I tried. Luckily it sold before I got back to the store to buy it.

Goat Mick should be along shortly with relevant 000-17 content.

I think the 00-17s is stellar. It's my most played guitar... I play fingerstyle and it has pretty much made me a better player due to the overall clarity across the board. You can't hide from a weak bass note, or you can't scrape a high note and get away with it! The thing is just too accurate! Very responsive.

I don't have the exact guitars the OP is asking about but I might still be helpful.

I have an 00-17L and a 000-18. I was also concerned that they would sound too similar before i bought the 000-18. It turns out that they sound very different and are each guitars that I just love based on their own strengths. The 0017L is sassy and responsive, the 000-18 is smooth, equally responsive, warmer, and more forgiving.

Happy shopping!

I actually played one last weekend as I was interested in that model.

It was not good, very flat, sort of compressed, muddy, would not recommend based on my experience with that one guitar.

Muddy? Could it have been dead strings? Muddy is not how I would describe that guitar.

The 000-17 sounds very different than the D-18 in my experience with both. Especially if you're talking a 000 vs a D. The two 000-17s I've played sounded drier, brighter, and were generally less sonically pleasing to me than the D-18.

I was interested in one myself until I played one the other day. If you are a bluesy player you would like them, but as an all arounder I would say no. Save up for a 000-18 if you want a small guitar than compliments your D18.
