Just to continue the admiration society for Michihiro Matsuda's work, I think of all the ex apprentices of Somogyi, he has struck out on his own path the most and established his own reputation apart from under the considerable shadow of Somogyi to the greatest extent. As a result, his guitars are the most original and creative instruments among luthiers today. Just a short list of the features he pioneered as he explored and continues to explore the boundaries of what constitutes a guitar, some of which have caused many luthiers to pay homage to him by doing their versions of them:-

# deconstructed/broken rosette
# deconstructed purfling and binding lines
# dropped D changeover by just turning a knob
# deconstructed guitar

The first two features have been emulate din so many guitars made by many other luthiers since.

I cannot think of others at the moment but I am sure there are more that he has pioneered. Spectacular fit and finish and great aesthetic beauty of the resulting guitar of course need not be mentioned as they are part of what Matsuda brings to the table.

All of which causes Matsuda to be one of the most influential luthiers in the world for other luthiers.
