Default Interesting article on building a home studio

Got this in my spam box from discmakers this morning, but it's an interesting read. I personally find it interesting that this guy did several things the same as me, putting the mix desk in the corner, a kill switch for the furnace and air, and so on. Anyway, worth a quick browse for those interested in acoustics

Smile Thanks Doug

Thanks Doug for the very interesting article. Maybe you could post a photo of your current recording space. I'm sure I could get some ideas.

I'll take a photo of my modest home studio space and post it later.

By the way, I'm really enjoying your "Closing Time" album and trying to learn a few of the songs. I'm glad you provided the tab/sheet music.

It was an interesting read. Looks like he kept his Tascam 3440 Four Track from the '70s!

Default Desk in the corner?

I thought that made the mics explode or something?

Corners are often problematic acoustically, but in my layout, it was the only place that made sense. I've also started using a corner - facing into it - for my recording spot, and that's working out well, too. if you read the article, you'll see why this guy chose the corner.

Thanks, glad you're enjoying the tunes, hope to hear you play some sometime. I have some old photos on my web site. The place is too much a mess as the moment to take any current photos!

Got that this morning too, interesting stuff, particularly about the closets acting as bass absorbers.

Just because it's a pretty picture doesn't mean the room "works." It's obviously very pretty, but building into a corner can result in real acoustic problems. Angled walls create a megaphone effect. You'd be better with near field monitors kept low in volume to minimize room acoustics.

Ty Ford

Robert Johnson chose to face the corner...........Ry Cooder says it had nothing to do with being shy, but because of the 'horn-loading' that it creates, or something to that effect.

Yes, horn loading = megaphone effect. In the beauty shot shown, the effect is somewhat minimized. It's really more apparent with a speaker set IN a corner. Again, if you're using near field monitors and don't have them turned up very loud, the effect is minimized.

If corners present problems one thing to ask is are they more or just different problems than say a rectangle ? You are going to have reflections either way. I was given to understand that symmetry is primary which could be accomplished in either.

Rectangles and corners are apples and oranges. Generally, square rooms don't work.

Rectangles have corners, squares have corners, triangles have corners.

Symmetry is important in the mix area, but not so much in the record area.

Non-parallel walls and diffusion are very important.

The volume of the room; height, width, depth also factors in. A small room sounds small.

Do yourself a favor. Put this book on your Xmas wish list: http://www.amazon.com/Master-Handboo.../dp/0071603328

Symetry was the main reason my mix position ended up in a corner. Because of limitations with my layout, it was simply the only location that didn't have a significant synergy problem. I was concerned, but focusing on solo acoustic guitar, I don't monitor loud, measurements look decent, and my mixes seem ok so far.
