GC visit - was I wrong?
Their Acoustic Room had spring-loaded doors that self-close behind you when you walk in.
On one side of that room was another smaller room with sliding doors that do not automatically close. A guy was in there playing and singing very loudly with both sliding doors wide open. He was actually pretty good. The guitars I wanted to try were on the far wall of the larger room so I closed the doors of the singer's room. This way we'd both hear less of each other. I played a few guitars the way I always do in a noisy store - facing a wall with my back to the room (and in this case to Mr. Singer) since a wall reflects the guitar's sound back to me. Works great. Try it. Soon a third customer walked in and I heard the singer tell him, "I'm taking off. Sit in here and play but keep the doors open. Don't worry about that jerk out there." I didn't acknowledge that I'd heard him. I didn't even look back, but just continued to play the guitar. A moment later I heard a voice right behind me, "Hey Sir, is that "Old Man" you're trying to play?" (I wasn't even playing a Neil Young song.) Maybe that was a revengeful dig at me since I'm in my 60s and he's in his 20s. I ignored him and didn't miss a beat but just played on, as if I didn't hear him. I preferred to concentrate on the reason I was there, to try guitars. I assume he then left. So, was I wrong to close the doors? Last edited by Tico; 09-19-2018 at 05:46 PM. |

Sounds to me that you behaved perfectly.
Kept to yourself and avoided an unnecessary confrontation. Nothing wrong with that or what you did.

I don't think you were wrong. Maybe you could have said something to him along the lines of can I shut this door to try a couple of guitars in the other room? Maybe that would have helped.

Seems to me like he was there to show off. I would've done the same thing as you.
Nowadays it seems as though some people go to GC and other stores to record cover songs and upload them to YouTube or whatever. You were there to try out guitars. Maybe he was too but I see no harm or foul in what you did. Putting myself in his shoes, if you closed the door on me, I may be a little perturbed if I were recording, or trying to impress other people in the store. Gotta love people.

If you run into that again, please use a fully laminated guitar to smack him in the head. That will hold up better than others. But really, you did the right thing and as was said, avoided confrontation with a person who is not interested in respect or harmony.

I've been in GC a couple of times when two friends (different sets each time) were apparently rehearsing a set list in the acoustic room (I'm only slightly exaggerating). It made it very difficult to actually *hear* the guitar/guitars I was trying. I'm not sure what happened to people's manners and their understanding of time/place over the years.

I've noticed this a lot as well. I have a few friends who regularly go to guitar center just to record clips of themselves playing for instagram

So they record there just to use a nicer guitar than one they own?
Surprised GC allows this. |

You did nothing wrong. People seem to lack basic courtesy these days.

Tico, you asked, "GC visit - was I wrong?"
Maybe only in going to GC when the yahoos were allowed to get out. Maybe next time, try at opening on a weekday.

This comment is juvenile and idiotic. Use a Telecaster. Sheesh!

Hey Tico, all I can say is I would not have been as kind (to either of them) as you were.

Not GC, but I visited a Chicago music store when I was considering a Taylor nylon string. I called ahead and asked for a quiet room where I could reasonably assess the sound of the guitar. They said no problem... and when I got there, they set me up in a store room, and that was fine. It was quiet. They checked on me periodically but otherwise left me to my own devices.
So perhaps if you know you'll be visiting GC, you could call ahead and ask. To answer your question, you behaved just fine. How can anyone be expected to assess a guitar if they can't hear it for all the background noise? |
