Great Lesson - Fiddler's Green - Tragically Hip
Just wanted to share a recent lesson from Shutup and Play. First, a big shout out to this guy because his lessons are great - both electric and acoustic - well made, great arrangements, and clear instruction.
I was never into The Tragically Hip, but I think I'm becoming a fan. I'm sure my Canadian friends are calling me very late to the party, but what a great group. Gord Downie passed away last year, but his music lives on. This is a wonderful song in Open E tuning. I would urge beginners to give it a try - if you've already learned the basics, and can manage a few single string hammer ons and pull offs, you won't find this one too challenging. The Open E tuning just sounds so full and wonderful. Had fun with this one this afternoon - hope someone else enjoys it. https://www.shutupandplay.ca/fiddler...-acoustic.html

I had a look at the video, but I don't see why you wouldn't play the song in Open D, and put a capo on the 2nd fret if for some reason you wanted it to be in the key of E.
Tuning up to open E puts additional tension on the neck which I prefer to avoid. |

Just watched the performance, not the lessons.
Something about that piece reminds me of "Moonlight Mile" by the Rolling Stones. Like the verse part. Or maybe it's just me. Don

I always liked the acoustic in "38 Years Old" by The Hip.....
It's my go to testing tune for acoustics...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbIZ1IuqCzU |

This is one of my absolute favourite Hip songs. Gord wrote it for his nephew who died of heart disease at a young age, and hearing it can still make me tear up. I knew I had to learn it when I took up guitar, but I never learned the open E version. I use this tab which is in standard tuning and even if it's not exact, still sounds pretty good.

I really like this and was unfamiliar with it. I subscribe to Andy's (Shut Up and Play Guitar) YouTube lesson page. He always does a great job of teaching songs, and often finds ways to simplify something that would be harder say in standard tuning by using a capo, etc. An example of this would be his lesson on Badfinger's "Baby Blue". He starts out showing it in regular playing with no capo, which makes it a barre chord nightmare for the hands. Then he shows it with a capo, which allows for more 1st position regular chords which make it very playable and sounds great. I have learned a number of songs from Andy's lessons. Two thumbs up!!
