Anyone who drops a bundle on a 40's series Martin guitar, is going to believe it sounds better than a standard Martin, and I include myself in this category. The alternative is to accept that you are just a big show-off...

If you use Brilliant Pebbles, it’s a sonic revelation.
Although I think I’d go with the google eyes too... |

Not so sure about that. I owned a D-41 and traded it for a HD-28 that sounded much nicer.

Oh, I’ve played plenty of D-42’s that were great-sounding guitars. But I’ve also played plain jane Martins that put all the fancy ones in the shade. It just depends on the individual guitar tops in question.

About six or seven years ago I asked Bill Collings if bling had any effect on tone/sustain of an acoustic guitar.
He looked at me like it was the dumbest question he'd ever heard (always loved that no BS part of Bill's personality). He told me, "Doesn't it make sense that if you substitute pearl for wood on the edges where the top joins the body it would modify the top vibrations and therefore tone/sustain?" That answered my question. |

My wife was with me when I played every guitar and as soon as I started playing my 41, she said that’s the best guitar you’ve played all day! I had her turn around and switched between multiple guitars several times and she could pick out the 41 every time.

IMO bling detracts from tone. I don't want my luthier to spend build time on shiny trinkets. I want them to spend time tap tuning, optimizing braces, ensuring flawless joints, etc.
The time and money wasted on pearly gee-jaws is much better spent on the things you don't see. There's a school of thought that the "prettier" models get more attention to overall build quality. I'm not convinced that's true. |

It might help someone decide on learning to play or becoming an art major.😉
