According to the Vintage Guitar Information page, the L4 had a bound pickguard in '35, and in 1937 an unbound one. All other specs being equal, it's possible; (1) the guitar was built in '35 or '36 but shipped in '37 or (2) it was built in '37 but fitted with an old pickguard.

Of course I have no idea which. In any event I'm guessing the guard on it now is original to it, as it's older, not newer.

Default Pickguard

In the first photo it looks a bit large for a 16" Gibson to me.....like something from or patterned after one from a 17" L-7. Without looking at it closely, I can't deny that it may possibly be original.

If you're happy with it, then you can leave it alone and enjoy that guitar!
