Default Ovals------MC-38 SH

Hey Rich,

I see what you mean about the cutaway being further from the sound hole like the 0000-18 that landed yesterday. I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for that and the other clarifications.

I had read that the 38 SH was modeled after the MC-28 so I wrongly assumed it had a couple little nuances, like his signature on the fretboard, the headstock yin/yang inlay and a bit more bling.........but was an MC-28. I was wrong and thanks again.

Does you brother have any interest in selling the 000c-16? I would think not, being it was a gift and a gift from his brother..........but never hurts to inquire.

Thanks Rich!

Bruce (Robbypad)

That may be the model that Dick Boak designed that became an obscure model but he said it is now a collectable. Brian May designed a similar one Custom MC2 featured in Jan. 2010 Martin Sounding Board page 15:

Default Ok, this is odd..........

Great find guys! Thanks! I'll have to think about this one. It was easier when I thought I was only looking for 7 ovals! LOL Then the 0000-18 Custom appeared and I got that. Now I've got the MC-38 SH and this Mickey Mouse ears oval to contend with......crazy but fun.

According to my Martin Bible, Martin Guitars - A Technical Reference (one of two great books by Richard Johnson and Dick Boak....highly recommended for Martin fans) 22 of them made in 1988, 20 for the USA and 2 for international........priced at $2700 in 1988. The volume and tone controls on the guitar kind of spoil it a bit. In book 2 of the 2 book set, Martin Guitars - A History, there is a photo of the guitar stating it was in fact a Dick Boak concept, they called MC squared or MC2-28.

It resembles a guitar built by Bozo Podunavac that is currently for sale on a Heritage auction along with a Bozo parlor, both from late 1970's. Here is the double cutaway oddball Bozo:

Thanks,

My first Martin was a 000-16C. I sold it when I moved on to wider nut guitars but I wish I'd have kept it. I like the oval sound holes. Good work getting your collection together!

Default Oval #6 on the way Monday....MC2-28 (double cutaway..only 22 made)

Thanks 29er!

Oval # 6 of 10 is on the way Monday so the group photo will be posted end of the coming week.

Need the MC-37K, MC-38 SH, MC-68 and 000c-16 to complete the set.

Here is a 1988 (the only year Martin made this model) MC2-28. There were only 22 made, 20 for the U.S.

Thanks gandhi85 for finding this one and bringing it to my attention.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me find 8 of 10 Martin oval sound hole guitars. TWO more to go. #6 arrived today! Photo below!

I am on a Martin oval sound hole hunt. Bought #6 Mar 26, #7 Mar 27 and #8, #8 Mar 28, the 000c-16 and I give thanks to an AGF member who spied it on Craigslist in St. Augustine, FL. TWO to go!

TWO Martin Oval Sound Hole Guitars Left to Complete the Set of 10:

1) MC-37K (size 0000 cutaway in KOA with oval sound hole)
2) MC-68 (size 0000 cutaway, fancy, EIR and Maple versions were built)

If you have one or more of these guitars or know of a friend or someone that does, please let them know there is a potential buyer for their instrument, should they be interested in selling it.

I am NOT seeking any of the prototypes. Thanks to those that raised those up the flagpole for me.

I've acquired these 8 since buying the first, the DC-28, on February 26th.:

1) DC-28 (dread cutaway with oval sound hole), 1983, EIR/Sitka
2) JC-40 (jumbo cutaway with oval sound hole), 1992, EIR/Sitka
3) MC-28 (think 0000 cutaway with oval sound hole), 1990, EIR/Sitka
4) OMC-28 (OM cutaway with oval sound hole....only made in 1990
5) 0000-18 Custom (0000 cutaway with oval sound hole; 1 of 2 bursts and 1 of 8 of this Special Edition oval hole, sinker mahogany run in 2018
6) M2C-28 1988 Guitar of mo. 2 cutaways with oval sound hole. Only 22 made
7) MC-38 Steve Howe Special Edition (1 of 40)
8) 000c-16 (000 size cutaway with oval sound hole in mahogany)

Thanks,

Robbypad

Group photo of the 8 once they are in house, but below are photos of the group of six as of today's arrival of the MC-38 Steve Howe and below that a photo of the first 5 Martin "ovals" and my very first guitar purchase, a D-28:

May I ask why? This is a very interesting thread and I'm not judging whatsoever, but I'm curious as to how you ended up on this very specific hunt.

Default Why?

cc132,

You asked why the quest for all the Martin ovals. I've been attracted to the oval aesthetic since its inception in 1981 with the MC-28. I really liked the 150 year Martin anniversary commemorative MC-45 built for Chris Martin IV in 1983.

I've owned 9 Olsons, 3 Somogyi's, 3 Claxtons, 4 Ryan's, Bashkins, Greenfields, Froggys, 50's Gibson archtops, Sanzone, 19th century Martin's, and pretty much every top tier builder and many mid tier luthiers, but I've always had an oval in mind.

In late February, I set out to find an MC-28, what I thought was the only one made, besides the Chris Martin MC-45. I came across a dreadnought DC-28 and was shocked. I started doing some research, bought the dread oval and put up WTB on UMGF and then AGF. I've received a number of referrals from both forums to ovals I'd not been aware of. These great tips have led to many of the 8 I've bought to date. An AGF member mentioned he had one that I had not listed. He was making me aware, not trying to sell. After I got to 6 ovals, he contacted me saying he'd be willing to sell to help me complete the set of ten ovals. His dead mint MC-38 arrived yesterday and is really nice.

Twi more to go..MC-37K (Koa) and MC-68.

Thanks for your interest!

Default Martin Ovals: #8/10 home, 2 cutaway M2C-28-see PHOTO, photo of 8 next wkend

Oval watchers: The 1988 Martin Guitar of the Month, M2C-28 double cutaway, arrived today. See photo. The volume and tone controls on the bass side cutaway ARE A MARTIN INSTALL. The guitar had to have them ordered initially for extra $314.50. You couldn't get them retrofit later. This was a surprise to me but all the Martin paperwork is with the guitar and it talks about the guitar in a pamphlet, 1988 Guitars of the Month. Cool!

Foreground: 1988 M2C-28
Back Row: 1990 MC-28, 2009 MC-38 Steve Howe, 1990 OMC-28
Bottom Row: 1983 DC-28, 2018 0000-18 Custom Shop, 1992 JC-40
