1968 Martin D-28, Brazilian Rosewood. Bought it for $400-425 in about 1979. I forget exactly how much, but it was right around there - I bought a strat at about the same time for about the same price and I just don’t recall which one was a little more than the other. It was my first decent acoustic guitar after learning to play on an awful $60 no name acoustic that was nearly unplayable.
That Martin was my only acoustic for about 25 years. I only sold it because I wasn’t playing, it needed some work I wasn’t prepared to pay for, and it had some real value by then. $400 wasn’t as cheap then as it sounds now - that was market rate. But for how great that guitar was (and I’m sure still is for someone), it felt like a bargain when I bought it and continued to for all the years I had it and played it. I had that strat for a really long time too, but I can buy a better strat for about $700-900 today so I don’t consider the $400ish I spent on that a great bargain. But I couldn’t touch a Martin of that quality for less than about $3000 now, and when you figure in Brazilian rosewood, for a whole lot more of at all. So that still feels like a heck of a deal... -Ray |

The best guitar, for the money, I have is a Seagull S6 Sunburst GlossTop. A good looker, J45 like.
I bought it essentially as a new guitar. Somebody caused a small crack near the pickguard, about an inch long. The crack was professionally repaired at the store I purchased it from. Because it could no longer be sold as truly new, it was marked down from $539.00 to $225.00. It plays well as it is short scale (slim version). I have dialed it in as far as strings, saddle, pins. It looks and sounds better than it should. Seagull S6's are billed as "starter" guitars. I think they are way more than that. |

When i discussed with a friend how a new Martin was like 4-500 bucks with a Hardshell case they look at me like im on something . I had a friend back then who bought his new D-35 for about 600 bucks in the mid seventies and everyone told him he got ripped off. If we knew then what we know now- I would of bought the Martin BR D-45 I saw for a song - I know what its like wondering why we ever got rid of this or that - ive got a couple that got away -but thats life ! I remember a Custom tele I bought for 150 and a White Strat for a 100 -- why did i sell those ? -probably becasue that was the going price for old used guitars ( everyone wanted new ) .

You could look at this two ways. Bang for the buck the best guitar I own is my Martin DCX1E. Scored it off CL while vacationing in Florida a couple winters back. This guitar can do it all. $325.00 with HSC in mint condition? Just silly.
Best guitar for the money? I don't expect I'll ever own a better guitar than my HD28. I gave $1800 for it new in the case with the tags still on it. Sounds awesome, and worth every penny I paid for it. |

When I was a teenager (more than a few years ago) I purchased a used mint blue Fender Mustang for $100. Love to have that guitar back today!

That would be my Martin 000-15sm. At $1,100 new, shipped and including a good case, it sounds better than many guitars that cost twice as much or more.
