: I am looking for the origin of the saying "No news is good news"

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS - "The earliest version of this familiar saying was attributed to the English King James I, who wrote in 1616, 'No newis is bettir than evill newis.' Virtually the modern saying appeared some years later in James Howell's 'Familiar Letters' (c. 1645) with the line, 'I am of the Italians mind that said.no news, good news'." From "Wise Words and Wives' Tales: The Origins, Meanings and Time-Honored Wisdom of Proverbs and Folk Sayings Olde and New" by Stuart Flexner and Doris Flexner (Avon Books, New York, 1993). Page 135.
To me the saying "No new is good news" isn't recommending an ostrich head in the sand approach to the news, whereby ignoring it is a good thing. It means that no news is better than bad news. In the absence of positive news, the best you can hope for is the absence of negative news. Good news is the best, then no news, then bad news. That's how I've always understood it.

When you had Walter Cronkite at 5:00 pm each day, it was totally bearable. News is no longer News. News is what brings more viewers and draw sponsors (commercials).

This link gives a pretty good perspective how News has changed in the past 50 years.

I skimmed that article and from what I gleaned I agree with the points it made. But there are recommendations at the end, and they aren't to avoid the news but to be an aware and conscientious consumer. And that's what I try and do.

I'll create my own quote here.

WHEN NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

TURN IT OFF

I agree absolutely, be a conscientious consumer.

What I listen to and watch are>

2) Local Events and Closures
3) Local and National Weather

I'm not sticking my head in the sand, I'm getting information that I need for my daily living needs.

Here’s the thing folks.
I don’t think this topic needs to get heavy. It was just a suggestion for something to try.
If you find that too difficult and it goes against the grain, don’t do it. I completely understand and it is your free choice. No criticism will come from me.
Why not allow those of us who find peace in abstaining have our free choice with some understanding as well. It’s all good.

Online church service this morning. Tennis for 90 glorious minutes then we went to a late lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant. Now on my patio soaking in some more sunshine and streaming Spotify and reading my kindle.

Ahhhhhhhh. No news is good news and all is fine in the world.

Thanks Rok and Horse to get me back in line.

This thread should be about how better we can enjoy our lives without News, not to complain about what News actually has brought about in this world.

I'm sitting here, done with my Britbox, enjoying a bit of Spirits (Canadian Whiskey) have my two current guitars on my A stands (Martin D18 and HD28V).

Tomorrow is Monday, so not actually looking forward to that, but looking forward to a nice Sunday evening, I remember those days when Me and my best friend would hang out at the local candy store (nowadays, they'd probably have us arrest for loitering) and just winding down the week.

May everyone have a pleasant and non stressful following week.

Of course. I wasn't suggesting otherwise, simply writing about what I do. I'll leave you be.
