I say, drink more. Before you start drinking for the evening, you can expect to get pushed around by the smallest guy in the bar. Halfway through the evening, you are ready to take on the biggest guy. Liquid courage, what a way to go - almost like Popeye and his can of spinach!

My wall clock says it’s beer:30 on a Friday!

Does Guinness get skunked - or do those of you across the pond like the taste of it that way?

I say, drink less. There are already enough alcoholics in this world.

I say alcohol in moderation is most likely better than alternatives.

As long as you can manage your intake, i think that alcohol can be a medication that benefits. I know many folks will disagree,

Sorry. No beer. The wife opened up a bottle of semi dry Riesling from New York. I regret going with Chinese. Who eats shrimp and broccoli? I swear is said chicken and did not slur.

I was hoping for a glass or two of wine (or maybe a pint of Guinness), but work went late into the evening each night this week (8pm, 10pm, 1am), so no chance with having to be back online at 7am.

But I'm off all weekend, and it's going to be pushing 100 degrees, so I'm going with a few cold, refreshing White Claws at the pool.

Clearly there are many folks out there who ruin their own lives and those around them because they are either unable or unwilling to drink in moderation...

Exactly.
My soon to be ex wife destroyed our family.

I've never been directly and adversely affected by alcoholism as you've previously referenced, but wouldn't dare minimize alcoholism as merely the absence of drinking in moderation...

Huh?
An alcoholic is an alcoholic for life.
The only “cure” is to never take a single drink again, ever.

Talking about alcohol always brings out the alcoholic discussion. Which is fine. I do believe there are many people that would benefit from a couple of drinks a week. Which I believe is it's main purpose. Often people get wound just a little to tight.

That is why I posted the link I posted earlier (post 58 to this thread). While I don't think this article is the final word on the issue, it suggests that some of the long-held notions about what constitutes "moderate" alcohol consumption, and the benefits of "moderate" use might not as accurate as we have come to believe. It still appears a couple of drinks a week is not problematic in any way...more about the old notions of "moderate drinking" and its purported benefits.

Here it is again: "Should We Be Drinking Less?"

Yes, it's a very slippery slope for many...

After posting my WebMD link on benefits of alcohol moderation, I read the N.Y. Times article that is more recent.

Totally opposing reported facts.

And then we wonder why we (as consumers) are confused or don't believe what we are told in the media.

Butter is bad, Margarine is good, Butter is good, Margarine is bad.

No wonder we have so much confusion nowadays.

I'll stick to alcohol in moderation, i feel better and more energized and knowing that blood clots are minimized, I am okay with that, as we have a history of strokes and heart disease in the family.
