Opinion: Stand alone effects for guitar and vox vs all in one
So I currently have a Yamah AG stomp, a Zoom A1 four, a boss ve-5 and a DigiTech Vocalist live Fx. I don't utilize all the effects on any of them. I like them all for what they do but. Form factor matters and with that I think I'll be selling the AG stomp. I looooove the A1 four and the DigiTech vocallist. The ve-5 seemed cool until I got the vocalist but again small form factor. So I've still been considering an all in one unit. The TC Helicon performer was appealing until I realized the box and guitar end up on the same channel out. So I'd love to hear from proponents of each option.

as a quick follow-up. I am not a huge effect guy but I like being able to have your standard stuff like Reverb and chorus and delay. Compression for vocals is always very nice too. So most of the things that I'm looking for. wondering to what extent the play acoustic and the ve8 have guitar effects or if it's mostly just vocal effect.

I grew up when home stereo was flourishing. A common choice and debate at that time was integrated systems vs. separate components.
After having some integrated systems (all-in-one) I realized quickly that I valued choosing my own components myself. Maybe I didn't want a tuner since I didn't listen to radio. Many of my friends went the other direction. Same thing for effects. I enjoy getting the best of breed (for me) and putting them together in my own way. I think if you are naturally fussy (or even obsessive) about what you use, you will end up going for standalone effects - even though it will probably require more of your time and attention over the long run. On the other hand, if you truly don't hear or feel significant differences between effects (chorus on unit A vs. unit B) AND you feel it is more important to PLAY than study, design and hook up different effects, then you will likely gravitate to all-in-one effects. I think it ultimately is a personality thing, and I think one needs to respect their own personality when making music.

We used to do separate effects for everything but as we 'boiled down' our rig to smaller and smaller we stumbled onto a single solution for us that works quite well. The EAE StompMix X6 digital mixer has all we need. Like you, we just use reverb, chorus and delay sparingly for the most part along with compression and notch. You're limited to the same effect on each channel but you dial in how much you want on each. I generally set up several 'scenes' that have dry tone with just a touch of reverb that get's used the most but then I have a heavy reverb scene, a delay scene, a chorus scene and another reverb somewhere between dry and heavy. Even that is way more than I would ever use at a gig but I love playing with heavy droning reverb at home for fun.
