Default gigging acoustic guitar

Hi ; looking for some ideas about good gig guitars. something in a smaller body [no dreads], nice pickup, wider nut [1 3/4"], about ; under $1000 . The reason is I have a Larrivee and a Martin OM; on both. they are getting beat up and I'm having trouble with the pick ups. Need something like a "go to" guitar , thinking Taylor model maybe? , never owned one.Thanks.

Yamaha LS16, maybe? All solid with a 'Zero Impact' passive UST, 1 3/4" nut and a good case included. Not bad sounding for a piezo, but I would always recommend some form of outboard processing to get the best from it. The LS6 (laminated back and sides), is cheaper but as well made and doesn't honestly sound that much different. Amplified you wouldn't hear the difference anyway. Demo below:

Can't do much about the "getting beat up" part - they get their dings and scratches at gigs. But you can repair / replace pickup systems for a lot less than buying a whole new guitar. For a dedicated gigging guitar, buy used and pre-dinged. You could do a lot worse than a Taylor 314 or even a 414 for your budget. I happen to prefer the ES1.3 system (9V battery) from around 2007-2010. 1.3 seems to require less fussing for decent tone than other versions, including the more recent ES2 (really not a fan).

There are a number of good sub $1000 guitars out there and you're going to get a lot of good responses. My advice would be to play as many of them as you can. Go to GC and any other stores near you and play everything in your price range. If something speaks to you, buy it and don't be too concerned with the name on the headstock. Also, if you find one that you absolutely love, buy it on the spot. Don't try to order the same model a little cheaper online or anything like that as no two guitars, even same make/model, are going to be the same. I've seen it countless times where someone falls in love with a guitar and then orders one and it just isn't the same as the one they fell in love with.

Played a few of these - doesn't have the 1-3/4" nut but this would be my first choice:

For a guitar subject to getting dings and such from gigging, I would consider one of the Martin X Series. I have had the DX1AE and 000CX1AE and they were very durable, came with electronics in the sound hole, sounded great plugged in, and with the solid Spruce top sounded great unplugged too.

Some folks will poo-poo them, but if I was going to perform (and I don't so take it with a grain of salt) I would consider one of them. You will save some $'s off of your budget for a case, strings, cables, etc. Your mileage may vary, of course.

That said, I just bought a Martin 000RS1 that was WAY less than $1K and came with a 3/4" nut, hard case, electronics, and great looks. It is Sapele which is supposed to be harder than Spruce and some other tone woods, so it should be a little more resistant to dings, etc. I am really liking it, but like I said, I don't perform out.

The D-12E should be pretty close to $1k?

Sometimes it just doesn't matter. If you get small enough mesh chicken wire to help, the audience can't see you very well. If it is big enough to see through, little pieces of beer bottle can still make dents in the front of the guitar after breaking against the wire.
