Maybe it’s because I’m on the cusp of 60, but I think a life well lived means you’ve got some wrinkles on your face, a dent or two on your truck, a few scars on your hands, and scratches on your pickguard.
Preservation is futile. Use your stuff! |

Better scratches on the pickguard than what I have seen decades of playing with a flatpick do the lower edge of a soundhole.

I recommend installing a guard on top of the pick guard.
