1995 J45 Value
What do you think a 1995 J45 Montana Banner on headstock is worth with some damage being:
1. Initials scratched in the back (SMH) 2. Hairline crack by the neck joint on the top (not all the way through the top) 3. It has the original HSC and Gibson shipping box Looks to be in good condition outside of those 2 issues

I don't know, but if it helps, I saw and played a 1995 J-45 with the banner on the headstock at a music store a few months ago. It played great, and had no cracks in the top and no initials carved in the back. It did have serious finish issues on either side of the bottom of the headstock from too much hanging on a hook in the store (amazingly, this '95 was new old stock-- bought by the store owner new, but never sold). Anyway, the asking price was $1,700, including OHSC.
That might help you to price the one you are dealing with. I'm not sure how much negative effect the crack and the initials would have on its value.

Are the initials scratched inside or outside on the back? I did a quick search and $1300 sounds like a good price. Not sure about the initials thing and I would probably get that area on the guitar refinished or improved, if on the outside. $1700 that Sax mentioned also sounds like a decent price. I think I saw some asking $2k for around that year. Sounds like yours could be a good buy, especially if you maybe offer a tad less.

To me that sounds too high for a damaged J-45 from that production year. The mid-1990's were not the GibsonMontana's Bozeman factory's best years in terms of fit, finish or overall quality control.
But I've asked a friend who's far more knowledgeable about Gibsons than I am to give us his input on this. whm |

Check to see that there aren't any structural issues on the guitar. The "hairline crack" on the top (?) could be significant or it might have little importance -- I'd get that looked at by a qualified luthier, provided their initials are not "smh".....
If all is well under the hood, and if the sound and playability pleases you, I think $1300 is a good deal, so long as you don't mind the initials. |

Pics of the damaged areas would help.

I tried to upload some, but they were too large. The initials are approx 1.5” high from what I can tell. The finish looks good and case from what I can tell

I paid 1200 out the door for mine and all it had was some finish checking. Came with a real Gibson case and a new pack of strings. I personally think it was a very good deal compared to what I had seen. I also think a new J45 studio is $1500 and it’s in mint condition so while the mojo is there on the old gibby don’t be pressured to buy it if u ain’t satisfied with the prince. Also there’s a J15 listed on here for 950 if you’d wanna go that route
