Default 2007 Applegate SJ (Sold)

Hi folks,

Have for your consideration a real treat to the eyes, ears, and lap - a 2007 SJ from Brian Applegate (former Jim Olson apprentice) made for the Healdsburgh guitar show that year. Very fine woods used that you will rarely see together and attention to detail that is staggering to behold up close. The bevel makes playing feel like a luxurious experience and the soundport pushes the "air" and immediate "attack" of the notes you're playing right at you which is a real treat.

It is extremely comfortable not just due to the Ryan-style bevel, the shorter overall length of the guitar from top to bottom makes the 25.5 scale feel more shifted "to-the-right" than your average full-size guitar like a grand concert or standard small-jumbo like Lowden or Larrivee, thus making it a breeze to play for long sessions.

I had the guitar professionally set up for light gauge strings being sure there would be no trace of buzz when tuned down as low as CGCGAD. I also requested to confirm if the repair on the small crack on the back was structurally sound. My tech confirmed that Dream Guitars did a spot-on job cleating the crack from the inside (not surprising!)

From an email double-checking with Brian about DG's previous ad spec's before I purchased:

"The specs look good except the bindings and bevel are quilted sapele. The bridge is also brazilian rosewood. I believe that instrument was built for the Healdsburgh guitar show. In other words, I got to build it the way I wanted The headstock veneer is also Brazilian rosewood."

Here's the original Reverb ad from Dream Guitars showing specs, previous asking price, and other things:

https://reverb.com/item/4927124-appl...sj-small-jumbo

I had my photographer friend snap some nice shots for this ad and just to have, because its truly the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen in real life. More on the Reverb ad.

I also recorded a few songs with it (no eq, just a Audiotechnica into a Zoom Q8) for folks to reference, one song is in Standard tuning and the other is CGDGCD, you can also hear Al Petteway play it in Standard on the third video which was the original selling point for me, the treble and bass response for a guitar this size are truly incredible!

The sound:
The tone of the guitar is deep, rich and full of sustain in the trebles. There's an inherent smoothness to the bass that I like, which is consistent in all the ABW guitars I have played. There are no harsh notes to be found up and down the fingerboard. Describing tone is subjective, as we all know, but if I had to describe it best, it's silky smooth in all registers! All three videos showcase it in a finger style context, however because of the added body depth this guitar is SUPER fun to strum and flatpick on, the European top is extremely punchy and responsive when you put some throttle behind it!

Standard

CGDGCD

Standard (Al Petteway)

Asking xxxx shipped and insured via PayPal for fellow forumites. I’d be keeping this beauty if the other four didn’t have sentimental value. Have some big house projects coming up I need funds for. Plenty of AGF sales to reference if needed!

Please message me if you have any additional questions about the build. My email [email protected] is the fastest way to get a response. Thanks guys and gals!

That sound port is something else! The hints of sapwood and quilted Sapele are easy on the eyes too. GLWS!

I agree, Brian seriously nailed this guitar. Some really special woods used on this one!

Beautiful guitar, an Applegate is on my very shot list, unfortunately the timing is off for me on this one.

Thanks brother, always a pleasure to hear from you! Wish I could maybe trade this gal to you for one of your many beauties but I need some dough right away!

It does, mostly for the fact that I know it's the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen - on top of being a great player. Someone will be very happy, nonetheless.

It's definitely in my top 3 best guitars I've ever owned with respects to tone, looks, and feel. Has all three in spades. If the other 4 I own didn't have sentimental value I would keep this one but currently need extra funds.

Indeed...I'd be interested to know if this was done by hand or laser-etched. In any case its quite a sight to behold in person and believe it or not, a fair amount of sound projects upward even though its not the standard oval shaped port most luthiers do.

I had some requests to upload photos of the crack and repair Dream guitars performed. To be clear, I’m not certain if this was even a crack in the wood, as it doesn’t seem to be along any grainline, it is likely Dream Guitars cleated it just to be safe - I remember reading somewhere that because of African Blackwood being basically the most dense wood available for a back and side option, it’s not common for there to be cracks, especially along the back. But who knows. If the photos aren’t visible for some reason at the Imgur link below you can also find it at the reverb ad! Thanks guys, prefer to sell this on AGF so feel free to send me an offer!
