Scientifically 432hz wins.440 has a brighter sound. But IMO higher than that the sound can become strident. But there are reasons that 440hz became the tuning standard. Much of it came from orchestras that wanted the strings to have a brighter sound. I have no idea why the NY Phil and some European orchestra have ventured into 442hz. It's unusual, for sure. [Personally I prefer the (old) CSO over the NY Phil (though I have acquaintances in the latter). But you know, if you think about some of the "sweetened" guitar tunings, where we flat the low E by 13 cents, then progressively let the tuning rise incrementally, aren't we in some way imitating the 432 model, but with modification of (what Steinway technicians call "spreading the pitch")? Are tunings like the JT tuning system merely accomodating the issues of equal temperament and string deflection- or does it partially put us in or close to the 432hz tuning as well?
