Martin Monel/Retro String: Rosewood vs Mahogany Lovers...a survey of sorts.
Got to wondering....(do that a lot)...
I wonder if Martin Monel lovers tend to prefer Mahogany bodied guitars and those who dislike it tend to like Rosewood bodied guitars. Love to see some responses - do you like Martin Retros compared to say phosphor bronze or bronze strings? And Do you prefer Mahogany or Rosewood guitars? Thanks. |

I have them on both an all mahogany 000 and spruce/rosewood OM. On the latter it was only an experiment that I thought wouldn’t last while I was busy with 80/20 uncoated on a 000-18. In the meantime something happened with the Retros on the OM over a period of time mostly sitting in the case - the initial sizzle dissipated to reveal a penetrating clarity of tone to that instrument. Although I’ve since had 80/20s on it (D’Addario is my favourite) it always goes back to Retros as the overwhelming favourite match of string to guitar.

Not able to answer your question, but I love monels on my maple-backed Eastman AR805, cherry-backed Waterloo WL-S and carbon-fiber-backed Emerald X10.

I was using retros on a 12 fret 00-42 and a Fairbanks L-2.
The 00-42 has a nice shimmer so that PB strings could be a little treble forward. The Retros cleaned the sound up, but seem to cause a loss in volume. Swtched to Mangan Monels and the tone is near perfect for my needs. The Mangans are louder and the treble strings, B/E, are less zingy/stringy as the Martins. The L-2 is incredibly lightly built, and has an extended high end. The Retros mellowed it out, but still a little too bright for me. Switched over to Mangan round core monels, and that did the trick. To answer the OP, I like both mahogany and rosewood, no bias there. I use PB strings on all other guitars and mandolins. I tend to use monels for guitars that sound good with broken in strings, which monel sounds like to me, a well broken in string. YMMV |

I prefer them on mahogany, but they also sound great on my OM-28. I don't like them on rosewood dreads or jumbos.

I love them on my mahogany Gibsons. I put some on my rosewood Taylor dread several months ago and liked them at first. I grew tired of them after a while because I missed some of the shimmer. I think it was because I had the dry old school sound covered with my two Mahogany guitars and wanted more contrast with my rosewood Taylor.
Here’s a clip I made with them on the rosewood Taylor.

I don't prefer either type of guitar, but have one of each and am really liking monel on both. Like the sound, feel, and longevity. Longtime pb user.

Based on threads from the past I'm in the minority. Retro monels are on both my rosewood b/s guitars and I love them. I dislike them on the hog backed LG2 and a Yamaha FG700. I use D'addario EXP's on those.

I haven't had a rosewood B&S guitar in about 15 years and never tried Monels on it. I love them on my current all hog Martin and on my Carbon Fiber Emerald, though, so I think there's a pretty good chance I'd also like them on a rosewood guitar. But no empirical evidence on that one...

I prefer Monels on my Bourgeois Mahogany D (Adi/Khaya) but use PBs on my other guitars, none of which are rosewood.

I love them on my Martin 00028EC...
But I'm going to give some EJ17's a crack as a lot of players I like seem to prefer these strings, but so far the retro's are my favourite...

these strings made me a better guitar player. they're so smooth to play and just with that little less tension. the tone is very natural on my mahogany parlor.

I use Martin Retros on a couple of guitars; 1 is rosewood and 1 is mahogany. Still need to try them on a couple of others. I used to think I liked rosewood back/side guitars better than mahogany but just realized I now have 3 of each. So for me I guess it depends on the specific guitar when deciding if Monel strings are the ones to use, and apparently if rosewood or mahogany sounds best. Not much help....

I like them on my mahogany Alvarez and my walnut Gibson J-15. Not so much on my rosewood Yamaha.
