Here are the copper GrandTunes with Snakewood buttons on one of my guitars (the back veneer is Bocote).

I think the copper + ebony looks pretty good!

I wish there was a MOP button option - are there reputable Schaller tuner button makers? I did a search but not much came up.

Scheller (not Schaller) has MOP (nacre) button options. Might not fit your tuner holes though.

Ken, I had not come across Scheller before but those are beautiful. I have to keep them in mind for my Michaud build, which I was conceiving as a slotted headstock 00/0 in Spruce/Koa.

Bob, you always have something amazing to pull out of your photo archive... alas, 3-4 month wait time - and then there's the little matter of the $1k price tag once I priced out my options. Gorgeous nonetheless!

Default Cool Update

Here's a cool update from Michael's workshop.

"Spent most of the day hanging out. Great guy. He really liked the look of your guitar."

Also exploring tuners from Scheller (not Schaller) at the suggestion of a super helpful luthier here on AGF. Thinking of a brushed brass/buffalo horn look.

Tuner Style:

Brushed Brass Finish:

Horn Buttons:

Though I kind of like the horn-on-matte-black look and think it may give a distinctive visual appeal to match the ebony binding:

For those interested, these come in at around $500 - so double the Waverlys, but half Rodgers.

All black would look outstanding, too, and give some more visual weight to the center of the front headstock in balance to the border. I know Michael mainly uses Waverlies, but if you aren't wedded to them you could look into a company that offers all black machines. I like the open back look on Michael's builds so I wouldn't go with Gotoh, but maybe something like Alessi.
Just wanted to acknowledge Erithon's post as heading me in the direction of all black machines...I think those matte black Schellers could really work.

When Al approves of your build, you know many things are going right

Default Tuners galore, starting to be a bore

The search continues. Scheller dimensions won't fit...note to self: figure this out before the neck construction begins next time.

Any experiences with Schertler among you? They have a matte black...any experience swapping tuner buttons would be appreciated but the ebony might just work out fine.

Have you thought about VS tuners? I think they are available in nickel, gold, and black, customizable with just about any wood or other material for the buttons. Chris Jenkins of Lame Horse guitars highly recommends them. Here they are on my Saddle Pal that was just finished:

Those are gorgeous! I'll explore, appreciate the tip - hopefully dimensions work out...

It looks like either the VS or the Schertlers would look great so I hope that the dimensions work out for one or both of those choices. This wonderful guitar is coming together beautifully. Very exciting!

Best,
Jayne

I have Schertlers on one of my guitars, and I love them. I too was searching for an alternative when I decided to try them out, and I have zero regrets.

I know that the Texas Kinnaird boys and Bruce Sexauer are fond of them as well.

Ryan and Bruce chimed in on a zombie thread I revived so this is looking like a strong possibility for me. I'm going to get a look at the bridge design and some Bob Colosi pieces later this week - but I have a feeling the matte black tuners, ebony bridge and dyed bone nut, saddle and pins are going to work together well to round out the design.

It would be nice to have the option to swap the ebony tuner buttons out at some point for something prettier, but there is a lot of pretty going on already in this guitar and maybe this more understated approach makes the most sense in the final analysis.
