On top of the sets that I have, I still have a big pile of "planks" of the spiderweb stuff that I got over 20 years ago. These will be made into a 4 piece back (someday maybe.)
I was wondering who got 086; congrats, Mark! I picked up a nice one too.

Thanks John, There were a few good ones in that batch. Sorry to steal these away from you. I was low on Mad Rose sets and jumped at the opportunity. Glad you found a nice one too!

Your craftmanship and photography is just incredible. They really go hand in hand together. Excited to see more of your Dryad models in the future too!

Thanks for commenting roscoe2311. Photography really is an integral part of my build process. It helps me avoid getting into the dreaded building zone as it forces me to periodically stop and really look at what I am doing. Many of my best ideas and mistakes avoided have happened from behind the lense.

Also, as I often say: “The camera is the most important tool in the shop because it keeps all the other tools busy”.

Default Guitars going to Woodstock

Here is the line up of guitars I'm bringing to Woodstock:

Left to right:

1) My 100th Guitar. It is my first 14 fret Penelope OM model. WRC Driftwood on Santos Rosewood with lots of Snakewood trim. Cutaway with arm and finger bevels. An elevated fretboard with a floating finger rest. If has my skeletal carved Snakewood head top laminate on a re-curved headstock.

2) My Greta grand auditorium model with an alpine Swiss Moon Spruce top on a Bloodwood back and sides. It has a wide open headstock with a moon burst neck. Black Ebony trim with Black Mother of Pearl and Bloodwood inlays

3) A second Greta. This one just sold and is just passing through for pick up. It is Tunnel Redwood on Tigerwood with a lot of Desert Ironwood trim including burl Ironwood bevel laminates and my sculpted pillow top head lam.

4) My new Dryad dreadnought model with a torrefied Sitka top and very old Amazon Rosewood originally sourced from H.L. Wild over forty years ago. It has Desert Ironwood trim, cut away and an arm bevel. Look close and you'll see what coruscate means in the Ironwood and torrefied Sitka silking.

A long, long time ago when I was just getting my feet under me as a luthier I received a lot of advice on how I need to develop a headstock design that I can use consistently to help establish my identity.

One look at these four guitar headstocks and it's easy to tell that was advice I never took:

Dustin Furlow will be demoing my guitars on Saturday right after lunch and will also be showing off his new BRW Greta for us. Dustin will also be including it in his soon to be released album.

I hope to see many of you at the show!
Mark

That's a spectacular crew you're bringing down! Looking forward to seeing you on Friday, and meeting my new friend Greta!

Re the headstock advice, I'm pretty certain that you've developed your identity sans matching headstocks!

Do you need special tuners, or are the sides the same thickness as what it would be for a more standard headstock? The tuning pegs don't need to be longer, do they?
Would I be right in thinking this design has thicker veneers front and back for added strength?

No. you don't need special tuners for this type of headstock. You can make the the side rails the same thickness as your typical solid head top.
It doesn't hurt to add a little extra to the top and back laminates. I use two layers of thinner laminate which adds the same strength without the extra weight. Plus, it goes well with the extra laminate I usually put under the fretboard.

The advantages of this type of headstock are it is very light, it is more ergonomic like slot heads are because the tuner buttons are easier to reach and control, also it is as easy to string up as a paddle head.

However, if you are looking for a guitar for a bar fight I'd recommend you consider one of those over-built factory brands. They can pack a wollup and keep on banging
