Default Brand new strings, dead A string? UPDATE 061219

Following the advice given here...

A big shout-out to George Santos @ D'Addario strings.
A new set arrived this morning.

D'Addario EXP16

I have triple checked at bridge plate and nut/tuner peg.
Loosened to point of removing and re-tuned but still just a dead thud.
Seems I have heard of this but never happened to me before.

anyone else?

I've had this happen with DR strings (numerous times), Pyramid, and Optima flats. This seems far more likely with round-core strings that are not properly crimped, although mine all were crimped and at full tension before being clipped. I've not had it happen with hex-core round-wound strings.

Only once for me, completely dead low E in a set of EJ16s.

It happens from time to time. These days it’s rare but certainly not unheard of.

Definitely let D’Addario know. By all accounts, they’re very good about replacing dud strings for free.

It happens. In fact, I once thought I had a serious intonation issue but the culprit was a bad G string, fresh out of the pack.

Happened to me with a DR bass string. Kind of a bummer. That's why I try to keep spares on hand.

I'm a tech, so I install LOTS of strings, and every now and then I'll run across a dead one, one that doesn't intonate, or makes noises it shouldn't. Often if you inspect it closely you'll find some abortion… uneven winding, diameter variation, etc. Also, with round-core strings, if they are clipped before brought up to tension, the windings may loosen or shift, causing them to go dead. In every case I've contacted the manufacturer and they've sent out a fresh set at no charge.

Thanks all.
Bought them at local Guitar Center.
Their response was strings are manufacturing warranty only.
Once the package is opened, basically tough titty.
Said if I bring in the guitar with strings installed they will replace the A string with a generic A string. ???
Bought 3 guitars there and always stick up for them on all the GC bashing threads.
Time to rethink some of this.

Yes, call D’addario, they will take care of you. I had a string that buzzed for no reason and they just asked for the number on the inside packaging then sent me a new set.

As with nearly every USA business I've used ... D'Addario customer service is outstanding.
I made inquiries about the re-designed pouches for their 3-Way humidification system and they sent me all these.

Its happened to me before too but with a different brand. I'm sure some mistakes slip out of most of the big string factories.

Not a dead string, but I had 2 sets of Martin strings have the high E string break at the ball end.
I contacted Martin about a replacement string.
They sent me 2 complete sets of strings and apologized for the inconvenience.

That was very nice of them.

Contact D'Addario about your set.

I’ve had too many dud 6th round wound strings to mention. I do have a small stock of single strings to replace those duds when they happen. Haven’t noticed anything really different with the different string mixed with the others. Then again it is the heavy 6th string and of the same diameter as the dud.
