Default Martin D-35 2018

Hi all,

I’ve been interested in the re-imagined Martins but had been more focused on the HD-28 and 000-28, neither of which I’ve played. however, I did play a 2018 D-35 this weekend and have to say I was blown away. Great tone, very open sound, and great string separation compared to other Martin dreads I’ve played. I’m very close to pulling the trigger on this one, though my focus had been on a D/PW. One question - have Martin dreds normally come from the factory with mediums strings? The D-35 did have mediums and I was surprised how much I liked them as I normally use lights. Anyway, look out for a NGD day soon as this was the best Martin dred I’ve played in a while. Also love the new appointments! Thanks, Mike

Yep...Martin dreads come with mediums, though I play mine with 12s and get plenty of horsepower. All the guitars you’ve mentioned are great...doubt any of them will disappoint.

Mike
Just ordered a new 2018 D-35 yesterday. I should have it by Friday. I too was blown away by the sound and playability of the instrument. I was also told by a life long professional Martin player that he thought the D-35 was one of the best all around production guitars available as well as biggest bang for the buck.

Default 2018 D-35

I ordered a D-35 in December. This one with a European Spruce top.
It comes with medium strings.
In talking to the folks at the custom shop, they were adamant that 13's were the best for this model.
FYI

I have been using mediums on my D-35 for over 35 years.
This year, I have experimented with Martin Bluegrass or Tony Rice Retro sets.
They all sound great.
Have fun experimenting.

Though i sold off my Martin Dreads they did come with medium strings. I also found that a after a little adjustment at the nut and the saddle they were effortless to play.

I string my Martin D-18 with medium gauge John Pearse 80/20 strings. It plays like a dream and sounds great. I also use the same set on my 000-42, which also plays beautifully and sounds wonderful.

Yep...as has been said...Martin dreads arrive with medium gauge Life Spans. Not a bad string either. I just can't stand the first string change as it's a challenge to get the original set off. Never could understand why Martin insists on using that stringing method when it''s so unnecessary? Sorry...not trying to derail your thread?

Hi Mike, that sounds like a great guitar! A couple things to consider: the D/PW is 1/4” shallower in depth and 1/8 to 3/16” smaller across the lower bout than a typical Martin or Collings dread, making it noticeably more comfortable in the lap. The D/PW is also much more lightly built and plays great with 12s (Lights) which isn’t always the case if you use 12s on Martin dreads. On the negative side, the D/PW has only about 80 - 85% of the volume of a typical Martin dread. Tradeoffs...

Best of luck whichever way you decide!

My D35 is a Custom Shop, 50th Anniversary Honduran Rosewood with a Sitka top. Came with dead mediums. Tried Martin SP’s. Yikes, Awful. I thought I broke the guitar. Tried a number of different strings and settled on LaBella Medium PB’s that I find are wonderful on this instrument. John Pearce were just about as good and at Wayne’s suggestion I’ll give 80/20’s a try next time. For me, the D35 has always been my favorite Martin.

I haven't played the new models but was already quite smitten with the previous D-35. It's one that left quite an impression on me. Someday it may end up in our collection.

As far as string gauge, I acquired Rev Roy's D-18 which came with lights and decided to switch it back to the factory setting of Martin's lifespan Mediums. The house practically shook! What power! It goes to 11 Not everyone wants that but I love it.

All our other guitars have lights but I adjusted fine to the mediums.

I have a 2017 D35s and it is a fabulous guitar in every way. I use John Pearse PB medium gauge on mine.
