Default Martin HD-28

I’m going to look at a 1996 Martin HD-28 on Sunday. It’s owned by a Nashville recording artist who has only used it in the studio. It’s in top shape. Is there anything about the late 90’s version of the HD-28’s that I need to be aware of?

Yes.
Be aware that you will be playing a very nice guitar.
It will sound equally as nice when finger picked as it will flat picked.

All joking aside, just be sure the guitar is structurally sound and that the neck is not in need of a re-set.
Check out the frets for wear.

I will be surprised if you don't fall in love with the guitar.

I have a 1993 HD-28.
It has the iconic Martin bass and very balanced mids with clear, but not bright, trebles.
IRW/Sitka........
I have heard/read from some here that 90s Martin's were somehow less than the older Models......I will put mine up against any 1968 D- 28 For volume, tone or sustain.
It is a wonderful guitar.

I have a 1983 HD-28 and it is awesome. Come to think of it, I've only ever heard good things about HD-28's and I think they first came out around 1975.

Just for comparison, I have a 2014 HD28 in excellent shape that sounds great. I also just got a brand new HD28E which sounds almost as good since I swapped the stock plastic saddle for a proper bone one. There is a difference between the two, but it's not huge. I attribute that to the old one being played in more. Chris Martin said the worst they will ever sound is the day they leave the factory! I will be moving the older one along though. I can't get along with the 1 11/16 nut width. The new one is 1 3/4 and much roomier for fingerpicking.

2000 HD 28 owner here, very happy with it. I don't know of any knocks on the older HD 28's. Just inspect it as you would the purchase of any guitar.

The Martin HD-28 is a great guitar. Not every example is stellar, but most of them are.

Thanks for the encouragement and positive comments. I’m hoping it is as good a guitar as I’m envisioning.

Just for reassurance. My 95 HD28 is a splendid guitar, and has earned its place among my Collings and Huss and Daltons.

The disclaimer is that not all Martins are wonderful, and you do need to check the condition.

Don't know about the '96 models, but some of the '70s era "D" models had bridge placement issues. You might want to double check the scale length just in case. I would check the neck angle, too.

I bought a 1990 HD28 about a year and a half ago and it needed a neck reset. Bridge was OK, though.

Bryan Kimsey's site has some info on this. I think it's mostly in the "Discussion" section:

No problem with bridge placement of Martins made after the 1970's.
