Default What kind of music do you play?

I've had my nylon string for about a month, now. I've never played classical and so never had classical lessons. I find myself mostly playing fingerstyle stuff that I could also play on a steel string. I find some of the music, such as hymns or old English music really lends itself nicely to the nylon tone.

Am I limiting myself by not trying to go in a classical direction? What kinds of music do you find yourself playing on the nylon string guitars?

Jack

All fingerstyle on a classical guitar, with a thumbpick. A few classical pieces, bossa nova tunes, a few Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins tunes, some jazz standards, pop tunes, Beatles tunes (Old English tunes ) and anything that sounds better to my ear on a classical. Some things I play on both steel and nylon and change the arrangement a little to adapt to the different guitar sound.

If you want to play classical, learn some. If not, you aren't limiting yourself by not. Lots of music works on nylon. Jerry Reed did a tune called "Bluegrass With Guts" that was cookin'.

I play mostly classical and brazilian popular music, but you can play whatever you think sounds nice on your guitar.
If you have no interest in a kind of music, then I can't see why you would be limiting yourself by not playing it.
Chill out and play whatever makes you feel good.

I like to play a couple Carlos Santana tunes. "Samba Pa Ti" and "El Faroh"

I also like "When You Wish Upon a Star"

I play parts of classical things that I have learned (I have to relearn a few things) and I make my own stuff up. I'm kinda in a period of non-playing due to tax season, but lately I've been making a bit of a comeback.

I use the guitar, mostly, to accompany my singing in the classroom.

I also play a little fingerstyle.

I am only a month into the nylon experiment too. I have moved all my "pop" stuff (paul simon, fleetwood mac, Beatles, etc) to the nylon for now-all fingerstyle. I am also learning some classical pieces. As I get more used to the longer scale (than I am used to anyway), I want to start playing some bossa nova and other latin music.

I play my classical with a pick to play praise and worship, rock, whatever comes to mind as well as fingerstyle and a few random classical songs.

I bought the classical when I was going to take classical lessons a few years back for a music minor but then I switched majors and had no time for a minor so I stopped and use it as an all purpose guitar.haha

I play mine with a pick too (as well as little fingerstyle). I see from your signature that you have an Art and Lutherie Ami - would that be the Ami Nylon?

I also have a Cordoba C5. I play the ami but not that often, it just doesn't put out enough sound. Now back on topic. (-:

Just about everything for me in my situation (solo acoustic gigs with git/vox), but I never play classical on my classical guitar.

I think my short opinionated answer would just be that no education is bad education. Learn as much as you can from all the styles that interest you. I feel that each genre has a unique strength like the harmony and sophistication and discipline of classical and the passion and compas of flamenco.

I don't know...I hope that makes some sense.
