I love this Tom! It's going to be fun to watch this thread and I'm very interested to hear what this wonderful guitar will sound like. This is like my ideal guitar- short scale, 12 fret, not too big or too small, redwood top, rosewood back and sides.... I'm living this one vicariously!

The first pictures have arrived!
Ben makes his own bindings and purflings. In this case they will be snakewood bindings with maple and black veneer lines. Here are some still photos of the process. Ben sent me a really cool time lapsed video, but I can not embed it here which is too bad:
Ben uses his thickness sander to achieve the thickness he wants. In this case Sankewood binding, 3/100 of an inch of Maple, 0.02 of black and finally 0.01 of Maple again. Sending the Maple through the sander: awilborn2b.jpg Checking final results...look how cool the handle for the depth gauge is lol! awilborn2c.jpg How they will look when glued: awilborn2d.jpg All laid out ready to be glued in the correct order hopefully! awilborn2e.jpg

And the shelf cut into a top
Well, maybe I will have to concede that Ben was right about this shelf. Looks mighty fine now!

I love the cross-grain patterns on this top - it's going to tie in with the snakewood binding beautifully. And the grain lines themselves are beautiful - wet and dry years creating a subtle design element as well. This build thread business is just too much fun, isn't it?

Thanks Bob, so far so good, keeping to the top shelf, no generic booze for me!
Thanks Mike, hate to admit it but I guess Ben knows what he's talking about. Quote:
, and still end up with a great instrument. Quote:

Bindings and some purflings are done and they came out just great. That Snakewood is really such a cool look! Special stuff!
So here they are all glued up just waiting to be sliced! bindings1.jpg Ben has a mini table saw set up for cuttings bindings. I saw this in person when visiting Reno this spring. Nice to see it working for me! bindings2.jpg Here they are sliced and lookin good! bindings3.jpg Love this picture. Just look at that Snakewood grain. I think this has replaced curly Koa as my favorite bindings. bindings4.jpg

I used to cringe at snakewood, but it’s really appealing to me now. After Laurent Brondel made a guitar with a snakewood fretboard it grew on me. Those bindings looking really outstanding.
