For three G I would visit my local store where a new, heavenly sounding D-28 hangs and take it home.

I really have all the guitars that serve me well. I would probably go guitar shopping and play a bunch in that price range. If nothing truly stood out to me as pretty special, I would spend the $3,000 on workshops and maybe some private mentoring sessions with some of my favorite singer songwriters.

Player grade Santa Cruz D/PW in Sitka/EIR — 1st choice
Second would be Martin D-18GE assuming you can deal with the GE neck carve, which I don’t particularly like.

I'd buy an Eastman AC-630BD and would have some change left over.

Preowned Lowden F model spruce topped/RW
Preowned Goodall TROM spruce top Preowned 000-18 So many good guitars in the used market which stretches the dollar so far if you have a chance to check the guitar with 48hr approval. Would never buy a guitar under other circumstances.

I would look for a used Guild F30, '60s or early '70s era. That probably wouldn't use up all the pretend money, so I'd look for a vintage Martin mandolin.

Martin D-28 is right at that price point. Some Gibson J-45 models are a bit less. I could be happy with either.

Add in an Epiphone USA Texan SB.
Tried one today - while not blown away, it was very nice. Be worth another look along with a J-45 & D-18

The question is..What type of sounds do you want out of the guitar that you have a budget of 3000 dollars for.
Understanding what you what out of a product as varied as a guitar is the first step in finding the right instrument.

It doesn't appear that the OP specified new or used, so I'll assume new.
It would definitely be a Martin, for me a dread, for others perhaps an OM or 000. So I'll just say either a D-18 or a D-28. You just can't go wrong with either one of these. scott memmer |

I wouldn’t. Why not, you ask? Well I look at it like an art aficionado that would not buy an original masterpiece because it would take it out of the public view. I am 75 years old and a beginner. I’ve only been playing about two years and I don’t expect that my playing will ever improve to the point that I would need to upgrade what I already have by very much. Irrespective of my ego or delusions of grandeur about my playing, it would just be a waste of a good instrument. I would prefer to hear it in the hands of someone that could do it justice.
