Exclamation 914ce Builder’s Edition pickguard options

I have this dream guitar I picked up recently and think I would like to get it a pickguard for some slight protection as it doesn’t have one. Would you go with a clear pickguard that Taylor sells and have Luthier put on so there’s no bubbles or would you go with say one of the darker pickguard wood choices that Thalia sells that was a collaboration with Taylor? Such as (https://www.thaliacapos.com/collecti...r-custom-parts)

I would suggest neither. I'm not a big Taylor fan, but I DO like the builder's Edition. One of it's unique features, is NO pickguard. IMO Taylor pickguards are ugly to begin with. I think a little clouding, scratches, & honest playwear would look better than a guard! YMMV.

I have a 717e that I put a Thalia pick guard on. I love it. It is the removable version.

That Thalia pickguard that you linked us to is very attractive. To my mind, putting a pickguard on the guitar is just common sense if you play with a pick, especially if you’re the generous kind of person who enjoys having your friends take a turn playing the instrument.

It’s all too easy to scratch up the top if there isn’t a pickguard on there.

Personally, I strongly dislike the Thalia pickguard, and would go with the clear.

Personally, I would reach out to Taylor Mullins (Holter). Those wooden Taylor/Thalia pickguards are ugly and a major turn-off for me.

As always, the standard disclaimer applies - IMHO. However, I realise that YMMV, and I’m cool with that.

I would recommend reaching out to Bob's Custom Plates. I've had 2 pickguards made by him and really like his work. He can make it with your choice of wood and can even orient the grain however you like.
