Help-Need to remove a Yamaha Fingerboard
This is my first post here and I would appreciate advice on a project restore. I have a nice FG345 I'd like to sell, and need to remove the FB intact if possible.
It has the typical high action and I want to install a wedge under the FB to correct it-an easier solution than a full reset. I have removed a few FB's glued with LMI's PVA, and hide glue, so I am familiar and comfortable with the process. Anyone know what glue Yamaha used? I've searched around the web and did find a mention that they possibly epoxied the neck/body join. Would they also epoxy the FB? I'm hoping they used a PVA which will release with heat. I have scratch built to date several electrics and one D28. I have a Jumbo and a OM project going and now that the weather is finally warming up I am beginning to look at them. But I'd like to get this Yamaha redone first. I know it probably is not worth the trouble resale wise, but I like to gain experience, as well as sending off restored items to others. This would be a decent player again with good frets and the action restored. Thanks for any advice, John |

Fretboards are not glued down with Water based glues. They used Marine epoxy. The wood will give before the glue. There have been successful resets and Bolt on conversions.
Wedging the fretboard sounds as tough as it gets. Tougher would be finding a buyer I'd think. Best bet for experience is cut the neck off and convert it to a bolt on. Still a huge learning curve but do-able. Good luck! |
