Default Does anyone make this string gauge?

I've been experimenting with different strings on my D-35 and it's led me to a theory about what spread of gauges might be best for it. I've settled on JP New Mediums in 80/20; I love the way their 80/20's sound on this guitar.

For those who don't know, New Mediums are MLLLMM. I think they are a (nearly) perfect gauge combo for a D-35. I like having lights on the A & D strings since it reigns in the boominess of mediums on a boomy D-35; there's still a good boom, but it's balanced and warm. And I love having mediums on the treble strings, I think that is where they are absolutely necessary on this guitar. The highs are thick and direct without any hint of the thin shrillness you can get with light trebles. Leads with medium trebles are incomparably better than lights on it, chords sound full and balanced on the high end.

My problem is with the medium bass string; it sounds hugely boomy and tubby. I've even considered slightly enlarging the soundhole to maybe reduce that deep boom and bring out the mids a little more. But I'd rather first try to reign it in with a light bass string.

So my question is, has anyone heard of a string set that goes LLLLMM? I think that, in 80/20, might be perfect for this guitar. For context, I don't primarily use this guitar for bluegrass & fiddle tunes; that's what the Clarence White is for. The D-35 is for everything else.

Elixir makes a gauge called "HD Lights." In your parlance it would be 'LLLTMM', where the 'T' is a tweener, a 'G' string between light and medium gauge.
HD Lights string gauge measures .013 .017 .025 .032. 042 .053, and come in 80/20.

I've been using this gauge for years, including on both smaller body guitars and big body guitars. For example, I use them on my Taylor Grand Orchestra (large), my Gibson J200 (large), my Epiphone EJ200 (large), and both my Taylor Grand Concerts (small). For completeness, my Alvarez likes Light gauge and my Taylor walnut Jumbo likes Mediums.

Cuts down just a bit on the boomy-ness of the large bodied guitars, and gives all of these a bit of a punch in the trebles. Overall, I like the well-rounded and balanced sound. And the Taylor Grand Concerts have more than enough bass for their size. And the biggest difference in string tension is in the A and D strings. For which my older hands thank me.

Don

Ernie Ball Earthwood Medium Lights come in PB or 80/20. Guages are 12,16,24,32 44,54. I love them. Some people say they die quick but for me they last weeks playing every day, and they are cheap. Less than 6.00 on Ebay.

You can email Newtone. They will make for you Any string gauge you desire at no extra cost. And about $4 in shipping
But it will take about a month to get your custom ordered set from England.

+1 for Elixir HD Lights. Love em, especially on small, short scale guitars.
I do know that quite a lot of people here hate Elixirs.

https://m.juststrings.com/8020bronze...lestrings.html

They sell single strings, just order your normal pack and experiment with different single strings. If the guitar is really boomy I doubt going down to a 52 or 54 E string will make much difference, but worth a shot

Check out the newly revised “Martin Authentic Acoustic” strings. In particular they have the half gauge set MA545 SP (12.5 - 16.5 - 25.5 - 33.5 - 43.5 - 55) as well other standard gauge sets.

Add me to the list of people who love Elixir HD Lights! I have them on all of my guitars. Based on what you're looking for, they'd be worth a shot.

Dogal offers some unique string gauge string sets that are 80/20 Bronze.
I like extra light strings and the Dogal Nightclub V25 80/20 Bronze
flatwound are the best extra light strings I've had on my acoustic guitar, and they seem to last forever.

I haven't tried the other two Dogal Nightclub 80/20 Bronze string sets,
but maybe the Nightclub V24 or Nightclub V77 have the string balance
you're looking for.

These Dogal strings are little pricey though.

p= plain, fw= flat wound

Dogal Nightclub V25 80/20 Bronze Flat wound
.011p - .014p - .016fw - .022fw - .030fw - .042fw
Dogal Nightclub V24 80/20 Bronze Flat wound
.012p - .016fw - .020fw - .028fw - .034fw - .046fw
Dogal Nightclub V77 80/20 Bronze Flat wound
.014p - .017p - .023fw - .030fw - .038fw - .048fw

Curt Mangan will put together any set of gauges for you.

I string up all my Gibson style J's LLLLMM. I use EJ17's and buy the .017 and .013 in packs of 5.

I like the Martin lights sets with the already slightly beefed up low E and G strings. I do subscribe to the buying a .013 and .017 for a tighter and well rounded treble response. Elixir is onto something with packaging and marketing the HD lights but they don't work for my playing style.

I’m always trying to consider total string tension since my repair dude insists I do not use mediums on my hd28 or J45. I would be interested in the total tension comparison between lights, medium, and these Martin half gauges. Anyone have access to this info?

+1 for Newtone Strings... they'll do pretty much anything you will ask for ... and even better, will give you very sensible advice about what you actually should get ...
Recently they came up with a couple of options for restringing my Taylor 12 string in all-unison pairs, in standard or all-fourths tuning, without over-stressing the neck (in fact less overall than before) ... it plays and sounds brilliant!
