Being picky here.....

Somewhere in the morass of facts and fiction below there was a discussion on picks. Can't find it now. Someone recommended a Moosepick.

I ordered one, carbon fiber of course.

Played it for a few days.

Just ordered 8 more. Wow.

And thanks for the tip, and no thanks for a $6/pick habit.

i haven't tried anything I like better than my Blue Chip TAD 40, may have to check out a Moose.

Well, now that you've discovered picks beyond the old Fender medium, try a Charmed Life red casein ($39.95) or a Gravity Picks Gold Series ($20).

I went for 40 years or so using the fist full of Wabash blue mediums a guitar shop owner gave me back in the day. I'd break one most nights, or drop one and not bother to bend over to pick (get it?) it up. I went through a period of "pick discovery" 5 or 6 years ago, and found there really is a difference; almost as significant as a string change. The two above have become my go-to; generally in the 1.15 to 1.5 thickness.

I found I preferred the Gravity Picks acrylic over the Guitar Moose CF. Then, Gravity came out with their Gold Series. I have a range of Charmed Life (black, brown, nf) but find that pretty red casein is the one I go for most often. Different picks for different guitars, as well.

You guys are causing me to get in all kinds of mischief. I was happy playing around on my 1.25mm Dunlop triangle pick until about the time I read this thread. I use a pick sometimes and my fingers other times depending on what I am trying to play.

Here's an incomplete list of picks I have tried since this thread started.

D'Addario 1.5mm Black Ice
D'Andrea Pro Plec Rounded Shell 1.5 mm Triangle Pick
Dunlop Flow Jumbo 3.0mm Guitar Pick
Dunlop Primetone Semi-Round Smooth 1.5mm Sculpted Plectra Guitar Pick
Dunlop Primetone Triangle 1.5mm Sculpted Plectra
Dunlop PrimeTone Triangle Smooth Guitar Pick 1.5mm
TUSQ Bright Toned Man-Made White Pick Bi-Angle, 2.00mm

There's a lot more, almost all the ones I didn't list were cheap picks from really thin on up to really thick and even a few more expensive ones and/or carbon fiber picks that I tried to like but didn't, or I feel are no better than the 1.25mm I have been using for years. These ones listed above I either liked and had for a while or spent money on in the past month for this test. A couple of the ones listed above I also didn't like at all.

The top three are the two D'A...s and the Dunlop PrimeTone Triangle Smooth Guitar Pick. The rest were no better or much worse in my opinion for my playing style than 1.25mm I have been playing for a while.

My top choice is D'Andrea Pro Plec Rounded Shell 1.5 mm Triangle Pick. I blame you for causing me to try something new. I mean I thank you...

Be sure and try a Blue Chip large triangle. TAD40. Hope that helps....

I tried a Moosepick. Definitely good as far as grip is concerned. But I lost pick “feel” as the foam on the pick (which gives it the grip) insulates the actual pick from my thumb and fingers. I’m just not accurate picking with it. Great for strumming but not for picking.

I mess around with all kinds of picks. I bet I’ve tried them all. I always go back to my Blue Chip TD 50.

I very rarely use a pick, but when I do, I really like V-Picks.

My favourites are the Tradition Lite, and the Medium R. The latter, in particular, introduced me to the joy of a fat (2.75mm) pick.

They have an almost bewildering variety to choose from, and they are very modestly priced - so it's easy to try a few.

I'll look into the V-picks and Blue Chips. I don't know which one I would want, so I guess I have to figure out a way to get a range of picks before choosing the one. Already signed up for the V-pick raffle, but that's probably not going to get me too far.

I'm pretty happy with the D'Andrea picks. They cost around a buck apiece, and I haven't yet seen any wear on the pick I have been using. Of course I am only about 10-15 hours in and flat picking or strumming mostly on flat wound strings. I think I am more likely to lose the pick before it wears out.

Convince me that I should try these higher priced picks. I saw the marketing but am looking for non-company testimonials. Are there others I should try?
