Here is the most current round of pics from Rory. This series reflects building the neck, fitting the neck to the box and ends with the fingerboard and the getting the veneer ready for the headstock (the wood is Scottish Elm burl).

Looking like it's coming along nicely now. The more of these threads I see, the more admiration I have for those who can take these lumps of wood and transform them into something as beautiful and inspiring as a guitar. And then for those who do it as well as this...

More update photos from the shop. Binding, I don't know what the guitar did to deserve such treatment, but here it is getting bound: ataranbinding.jpg Apparently Rory felt bad because he appears to have bandaged it up now: ataranbinding1.jpg Rory has a real nice volute "extension", I am not sure what he calls it, but I really liked it and asked for one on this build: ataranvolute.jpg ataranvolute1.jpg ataranvolute2.jpg ataranvolute3.jpg

The hot sand faded bits look great and the red interior is a real standout. Killer instrument coming along!

Agree with you on the neck volute--very elegant and classy!
Loving the neck itself too--that wood is beautiful! Gives a wonderful contrast to the back plate and the fingerboard. What species is it? Very excited to see this one soon, as I'm sure you must be!

I believe the neck wood is padauk. And I agree it provides a lovely contrast with the body while still coming from the same tone pallette. I think this is looking fantastic. My envy is off the charts at the moment.

Hi all,
So pleased you are enjoying the build thread. Thank you Tom for posting the pictures. The guitar is in the final stages and what a guitar it has been to make! I also just wanted to add a few thoughts regarding the build and reasons for wood choice... As we know, Claro Walnut and Redwood give a beautifully warm and earthy tone. I wanted to add a little sparkle on top and with the Padauk being stiffer but lighter than Mahogany, it will contribute to this brilliantly as it rings like a bell. I find that denser wood i.e. Wenge, focuses the instrument and lighter woods allow the overtones to breathe. Most importantly however, is the stiffness. Padauk is unbelievably stiff and this keeps the energy transfer to the bridge as direct as possible. It also looks incredible. Another note, is that this is African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) not its heavier cousin Burma Padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus). We also decided to to use an FSC African Blackwood fretboard, this stuff rings for days and will help with adding the sparkle. In regards to the Hot Sand Fade, I learned this technique about 3 years ago and I absolutely love how versatile it is and how it enables colours and parts of the guitar to blend together, it's also pretty fun to do! Have a great weekend - I'm off to carve an African Blackwood bridge. All the very best, Rory |

Well, anyone following the B.I.G. threads today know that this has been a pretty rotten day for me and many planning on attending, what I will say, is a great event. Adding to the disappointed for me personally was that Rory was coming with his amazing guitars including mine, now we will have to see what happens.
On a really good note though, Rory has finished the guitar, on time for B.I.G. and got some photos. Although it won't make up for the rest of the day, it is a really nice start!!! This guitar took my breath away. Please note all the little details especially with the dark sand fades that Rory has there on the rosette, headstock (front and back) arm bevel etc. Just simply gorgeous, there is no other way to say it. ataran guitar finished.jpg ataran guitar finished 1.jpg ataran guitar finished 3.jpg ataran guitar finished 4.jpg ataran guitar finished 5.jpg ataran guitar finished 7.jpg
