Recommended Teacher for a Beginner
A friend of mine is looking for an acoustic guitar teacher. She’s a beginner. I don’t really know of anyone and am looking for recommendations. I don’t think it matters much where they’re located since everything is online now.

The New York Guitar School has some very good guitar teachers (currently all lessons are remote learning).
https://nycguitarschool.com/online-private-lessons/ I can highly recommend Tia Vincent-Clark. She's familiar with many types of music, she is clear, methodical and a lovely person. Her parents were also musicians and teachers so... she knows how to teach. Sometimes teachers will simply teach the exact same thing to every student, but Tia will tailor lessons to fit the student. I take lessons myself with Tia from time-to-time whenever I need a boost to get me over a hump. Also good at NYGS is Jen Elliot, who is especially good with absolute beginners. I should also mention that their small group classes are quite good and a lot of fun (depending on your group). If your friend is looking for recorded on-line courses, in my opinion there are three great ones: Justin Guitar is really good if she wants to get started learning chords and playing songs right away. The philosophy of this course is - start playing and having fun and the theory will come later. It's also learn at your own pace. Highly satisfying. The lessons are free, but you pay for ancillary materials (or just donate). And importantly, Justin is a very good and engaging teacher. https://www.justinguitar.com Paul Davids' Learn Practicer Play imposes a bit more discipline. You learn chords, songs, and scales (notes on the fretboard) and light theory along the way. And there is an implied timetable for learning each module before moving on to the next. It has a very logical, methodical structure. Like Justin, Paul Davids is a very fine teacher. https://pauldavidsguitar.com/guitarcourses/ Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar is a super solid course that has been around a long time. It uses videos and lesson books simultaneously. It moves kinda fast given that it really has a lot of theory along the way. This course will teach you a lot quickly, but is for a very self-motivated learner. I find the curriculum a bit more scattered than Learn Practice Play -- but it definitely goes deeper. And Steven Krenz is also a really clear and engaging teacher. https://www.learnandmaster.com/guitar/ All of these options also offer a robust on-line chat community for asking questions and sharing information -- though Justine's and Gibson's are by far larger than Paul Davids' (which is a much newer site). So many great options for a self motivated beginner. I'm sure there are others. Hope that helps. And good luck to you friend. Exciting! Last edited by MHC; 12-01-2020 at 04:48 AM. |

Those methods work but so does watching someone who is a good player who also, key here, knows how to teach. The internet makes that more available to more people than ever. There’s a reason JustinGuitar gets recommended over and over again. Paul Davids is great too, although personally I’d wait until I had the real basics down before going to his stuff.

I’m a beginner, and I am very much enjoying guitartricks.com. I’m very much a methodology learner, and I like having a clear framework for learning and practice. At $99 for an entire year, it’s pretty hard to beat.

Though I haven't talked with her in quite a while myfriend Robin Flower has been teaching in Oakland for years. I assume she's made some covid accommodations.
