Living in Michigan at the time, the wreck was a big headline on an important day in my life. Later living in 'da UP eh I made it a point to go to the end of Whitefish Point to see the waters there, with imagination fully active. I have seen storm waves breaking on the shores of lake Superior that rival anything I've witnessed in Hawaii or on the California coast.
This simulator view shows some truly frightening images of what it must have been like on board, especially after ~5:00 into the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh1F...ckMA&index=269 |

What a powerful song, lyrically and melodically. One of my all time favorites.

¨Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?¨
I'm not in love with this simple, repetitive (chord progression) song, but God I admire that line. |

It may seem repetitive, but if you’ve ever see the sheet music for the song each couplet of lines total to make 29 verses. There were 29 crewmen on board.

For a different twist, look up the two YouTube posters who do the ships in and out of the Duluth harbor and the marine traffic web site.
A few times in past weeks you could see the 700 - 1000 ft ships changing their routes because of 40 - 60 MPH wind gusts. That is also fund where you see the ships coming from Europe and sometimes Korea with wind turbine components and leaving with grain. More locally, you sometimes see those turbine parts being distributed west and south. Depending on time of year and markets you see the grain heading to ports. As far as music, look up the James R Barker on YouTube and play with decent speakers. That's considered the best horn on the lakes. The best view and sound is MTB riding or hiking the Duluth Traverse trails.

As a reference concerning the "weather" 0n Lake Superior, I have a friend who was stationed on Stannard(The name of the man who discovered the reef in 1845) Rock light house back in the 1950's, this light house is about 50 miles North of Marquette out in the middle of Superior. It is built of stone blocks right from bedrock. In severe storms, you could feel the structure "move" when a large wave hit and they sometimes took water through the kitchen windows that were 35 feet above the water level. The Great Lakes are nothing to mess with in November--The ship "Bradley" went down in Lake Michigan, Nov. 18, 1958, 3 men survived after the ship broke in two and sank. She was empty heading to Rogers City, Mich. for 1 more load of limestone that's used in the steel industry.
I went to school at Mich Tech up on the Kewaunau Peninsula(The little peninsula sticking out from the U.P.) that had a canal crossing it with a large bridge. The canal was used big time back in the copper mining days! There was no modern ship traffic EXCEPT in November when the boats would come through to get out of the weather out on the big water. The song and story of the Edmund Fitzgerald give me goose bumps and a lump in my throat every time I hear it.

I believe it. The wavelength is different than open ocean waves too and can really make for some turbulent waters. Lake Superior is bad given its long east-west fetch to build waves, but the other shallower lakes can be even worse at times. Choppy waves are more troublesome than rollers.
