A friend of mine has been a commercial sailor on the Great Lakes for 20+ years,
One year a new guy signs up, They’re out on the water a few days and notice the new guy’s got a big cross around his neck he keeps fingering. Looks a bit nervous, He asks my friend “Hey, do these boats ever sink?” Friend gives it a beat and says, “Yes! Did you ever hear of the Edmund Fitzgerald!?!” God I love that story. Back in the early 70's when he was a power in sailing racing, Ted Turner ("The Mouth of the South") pooh-poohed the Great Lakes' weather reputation, took a lesson big time in the Chicago to Mackinac sail boat race about 1970----he never again denigrated their weather reputation. I think that was the year that half the fleet got wiped out---"First to finish" at Ludington (about half way up) was a big deal!
