The SM57 and SM58 are basically the same other than the housing and both are pretty much indestructible. Of the two, the SM58 is more appropriate as a vocal mic, since the cage, which is both washable and replaceable, acts as both a pop filter and a spit guard protecting the cartridge.

I agree, but for some reason I like the sound of a 57 (with a foam windscreen) way better.

Tom Petty disagreed with you, but they are basically the same. But 57s mic guitar cabs too. I still think SM57s should be everyone's first mic. Not bad on a guitar either.

I know that some prefer the SM57 over the SM58 as a vocal mic, but if you watch any music show you will rarely see SM57s used for vocals. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, just uncommon. BTW, I have both, plus a couple of Sennheiser e835s, a Sennheiser e838, and a couple of Behringer XM8500s as emergency backups. For my voice I prefer the e838, but I really have no problem using any of these.
