Question Takamine Jack Socket Help

Hi all!

I need to replace the jack socket on an old Takamine EN-20C

The one in the guitar had 3 wires White, Red & Ground.

The ground is soldered onto a third lug right underneath the main ground lug - this is then soldered onto the main ground.

I have a spare socket but it does not have this third lug (there is a space where it should fit).

Question is, can I use this new socket or do I definitely need one with this extra lug? Why is the extra lug there?

Cheers!

K

The extra lug would likely be to turn battery power on and off. Usually connects the 'ring' connection of the jack to the 'sleeve'(ground) which completes the battery circuit. Yes you probably should use a jack with the third lug.

A normal TS guitar lead doesn't have the 'ring' so I'm not sure how what you've said could work?

That is correct, no 'ring' connection on a standard guitar lead. In the link below is an image that I've indicated the 'ring' connection in a jack that when a standard TS type guitar cord is plugged in will connect that ring contact to the sleeve. The sleeve connection completes the battery circuit to turn on the electronics of the guitar.

If you can post your location (US, Europe, or other) I can browse around see if I can locate a source for a jack. Sometimes the manufacturer can supply the correct part. What happened to the original one that it needs replacing?

This one looks like the jack on my Tak EAN-10C and the description states it is a common replacement for Takamine.

Pre-wired jack that plugs into a preamp. Not sure if the Takamines preamp would have a jack...

If it’s a switching jack, just get a Fishman Switchjack from Stew-mac.....easy to install.

This is not the correct jack for most Takamine guitars.

Normally the tip is the audio out, the ring is battery negative and the sleeve is circuit ground/shield.

Therefore, a standard TRS end pin jack will work. The OP can contact Takamine USA and they can get him connected with the correct part.

Get in touch with Bill Sutherland at Addicted to tone. Here is a link to his Reverb store front. He's the Takamine guy in the US pretty much and carries and sell all kinds of Takamine parts. He's helped me out a number of times keeping my touring acoustics up and running.

Many thanks all for the info!

I figured out what I did wrong...

The gold replacement jack I already had was ok to use - I first fitted it and replaced the wires like for like as on the original one (white to shorter lug & red to longer one), turns out on the replacement they need to be the other way around. I switched them and it works fine.

On the original the sleeve tab inside which butts up against the jack had snapped, it was still working but now and again would loose connection.

Glad you got it figured out! If you ever need any kind of Takamine parts keep him in mind, he's the best!
