Wow Brazilian rosewood for a neck?!? Are you expecting some particular tonal features (like a neck ringing of sorts?)

I'm not expecting any tonal features. I had a cocobolo neck on a guitar once that I loved. I'm doing a special project and this weeke be mainly for aesthetics.

Keep your eye on eBay, searching "Brazilian Rosewood Lumber", "Rosewood Lumber", and "Guitar Maker/Luthier Supplies". Good luck!

I'd love to see a photo of the neck when it's done.

Just to note I had a PRS McCarty many years ago with a solid BRW neck (neck + fretboard was a single piece of BRW).
It felt fabulous to play but gave the guitar a very, very dark tone vs. other PRS with a mahogany neck. Tried different pickups etc. but no joy so I sold it.

All I'm saying is that it will - obviously - have an influence on how the guitar sounds. What that might be for a steel-string, I have no idea. Let us know!

Cheers,
Steve

I built myself a solid Brw banjo conversion neck. It makes my two-ton Gibson feel like a three-tonner.

I still have my PRS McCarty with solid BRW neck&board. I bought it new from Fred’s in December 1999. They can pry it from my cold, dead hands. Changed to Fralis underwound P92 in neck and Unbucker in bridge. It sounds like a grand piano. And it always feels like home.

Also had a Hatcher with a IRW neck. Also very cool. Decided I’m a spruce top guy. Amazing build tho. Great feel as well.

Paul Heumiller of Dream Guitars likes rosewood necks on his personal instruments. He thinks it gives more sustain. You can see photos of his McConnell with a Brazilian neck here, and his Buendia with an East Indian neck here.

My 2014 Hatcher Greta is western red cedar and EIR with a beautiful dense EIR neck. Mark and I talked about whether the slightly heavier neck might add to sustain and that certainly is a major attribute on this guitar but there probably is no way to measure it relative to a mahogany neck. I especially love the velvety, waxy feel of rosewood and in fact regularly give the neck a quick rub with 600 grit sandpaper when it begins to feel too polished (crazy move, yes, but this is my "forever" guitar so I'm not worried about damaging its resale value). Here is the build link:

Thanks jmagill, that is a very nice look with the rosewood necks. I sure would like some close up shots. Wish I had a chance to hear them.
