IF ammonia works on Locust then my guess is that it is the tannin's in the wood that it reacts with. If that is the case then you can also use the vinegar iron solution to blacken the wood too, that works a charm on white oak which is rich in tannin. Follow that up with india ink or black leather dye and you would probably be hard pressed to tell it's not ebony.

Yes, it's the tannins. Ammonia seems to penetrate much more than the ferric acetate solution, which is a surface stain.
